So according to this, all i should need to change my choco into dalamund red from desert yellow is 4 apples and one or two berries?

Following my rule set, you'll need 4 feather procs of reds and 1 proc of blue.

He ended up with millioncorn yellow for some reason. any reason why? was there not enough fruit procs maybe? also, where should he go from here to get either dalamud red or midnight blue? dalamud red would probably be easier to obtain im guessing.

Millioncorn Yellow is in the right path but you are right, that's short quite a few pallettes.

I'd try to stuff him with just reds, after getting the proc message. This might be a two feed process (One of my FC members had this problem, too; RNG was involved and she ended up with Pumkin).
Feed it as many reds as you can; I'd say around 15 or so (Given that, if things are as someone mentioned above, the proc message alone may not be enough). Then wait and see what color you get. You're looking to get Blood Red, which is on the way up to Dalamud.

Once you hit Blood Red by feeding it only red fruits, feed it 1 single feather proc of blue and it'll be Dalamud red (Another person before you had this problem; she finally got it earlier).
