Finally landed at Slate Grey, I feel like I'm so close! Now it's just a question of what do I feed him next to try for black, 10 of each lightening fruit? Please help, I don't want to mess this up and end up 5 steps backwards =X

Lightening fruits would take you the opposite direction of soot black. you want to feed it I think 10-15 of each darkening fruits may be a good start. Although its assumed right now that you get somewhere between (+/- 5-10) per fruit. so 10 should be a good starting point

Thanks! Got confused with values, was thinking I needed to lower numbers and therefore lightening fruits. Just fed 9 apples, 9 pears, 10 berries. Fingers crossed
