Try feeding two plums now at Kobold Brown, make sure you get two feather messages. I think there's RNG involved here but you're close.

I'll give it a shot, but I'm more mystified that I managed to loop to the original color using two different lightening fruits.

I was in the same boat for several feedings. I was able to break it and reach Soot Black.

From Deepwood Green > 2x Valfruit, 1x Pineapple > Kobold Brown > 1x Doman Plum > Soot Black

The 2 extra fruits slightly altered my RGB values, so that the single Plum would give me the change I wanted.
