maybe the grow new feathers means you fed it enough to warrant a change, like some said they saw no change even they fed some
Here's my Digby- I followed the guide for Celeste Green, giving him 28 Doman Plums, but I did NOT get that color, I instead ended up with Sky Blue. I did a second feeding combining some pears and pineapples, and miraculously got the color I was after the second time round-

Some more blue variants. Peacock Blue - Fed 2 O'Ghomoro Berries first cycle (no color change), then 19 O'Ghomoro Berries (darken blue) and 10 Mamook Pear (darken green).

Mine turned out Sky Blue
Fed it:
12 oghomoro 11 doman 3 apple

I edited my previous post with what I fed it.
For the sake of adding to the data collection, here is what I did and the result I got:
Rank 1 Chocobo (lol...), I fed 3 Doman Plums followed by 3 Valfruit and got no message of change in plumage. Then I fed 2 more Doman Plums and got the message "[Chocobo] is beginning to grow new feathers!". I then fed 2 more Valfruit but got no additional messages. Total is 5 Doman Plums and 5 Valfruit. The resulting color is "Sylph Green". I will post again with my results after the next feeding.
