Yoshi did say we would be taking to the skies sooner than later.

There are airship parts, but they seem to be for the Ixal, so we're building an Airship for the Ixal, but not us/our FC/whoever

Maybe they'll let us ride it?

Hold your horses. There also seem to be some minions that have no mention as to how to obtain them. Specifically, there are 5, each relating to one of the beast tribes. I imagine they're a part of that questline.

They're probably rare desynths from airship parts that require 100 hours of grinding Ixal beast tribe crafts to make.

You will go to the "moon" on the next expansion using your airship to travel a dimensional gate, but instead of green color, it will be red color (cough...cough... Burning Crusade). And you will meet new terrestrial race, Vienga and Ewotaru, all races will be super furry with big ears and tails. New jobs to play as Gunner and Corsair aka Sky Pirate! Voila! New reasons to make alts and pay more money for your monthly subs!!
