It doesn't look like you need a high level crafter for it as it will all be done at a crafting station at the camp.

No, the crafting is optional to the main Ixal quests.

Has nothing to do with recognizing something. When I see someone dye their WHM Robe purple, it takes away from the iconic look of it. Not saying it should or shouldn't be allowed, but not everyone thinks the same way you do.
