I prefer the classic names in general, but not if it requires twisting the lore around to justify them.
That said, they couldn't even come up with decent lore for Arcanist, so I guess classic or no, there's no exemption. :-/

Anyone else care to chime-in? And explain why, too; even if we disagree, I always like seeing things from another perspective![]()
As I understand, the common convention is that what we call 'Paladin' is literally just 'Knight' in JP, typically an upgraded version of 'Fighter' that can use white magic in some games, but 'Paladin' sounds cooler so we've been using it since IV. Except in V where it was 'Knight' again for some reason, but they still used Cover and were good at beating the crap out of things with swords and didn't have white magic. Meanwhile, 'Dark Knight' is literally called 'Magic Knight' or 'Demon Knight' depending on the translation? (I believe 'Demon Knight' is the more accurate intent, given well, you know, but yeah.) 'Warrior' used to be a downgraded Paladin (mostly in the original,) but it's been fleshed out as its own class (usually in the form of a Berserker or just straight up Warrior class).
Basically, Square's idea of how basic physical fighters should be and interact as class designs changes like every other damn game...
video games are bad
Personally I enjoyed both the names of and the abilities of the original 1.0 classes. They were unique. They combined different ideas from different classic Final Fantasy classes into their own unique class. Each class had a "feel" too it. Thaumaturge was a master of life and death, light and dark. Conjurer was a master of the elements, both benevolent and chaotic. Lancer was a master of the hunt, who turned his battles into a sport. So on and so forth.
Honestly, I feel that the "classic" jobs are just too generic. Conjurer is now a healer. Thaumaturge nukes things. Lancer is a melee piercing DPS. No real difference when they reach their jobs either.

The new names are cool and all, but it's caused all sorts of problems.
If they started out with traditional classes in both name and design, we wouldn't have to warp interesting and original classes to fit in the old design, we could have added those later.
Also, I have not once had the need to remove my job to go back to my class. Does anyone think the upgrade is little more than a formality?
Always classic. Stay classy.

Classic, it's a FF MMO.

Keep in mind that in the japanese version of the game, the class names are no more than "weapon type name" + user .

I'm not a big fan of conjurer. When I think conjurer I think of someone conjuring spirits to fight for them....not healers. Seedseer would've been better.
