I... don't care New or Classic as much as I do Lore. If it fits with the Lore, then it's fine by me.

This for me too. While I do like to be captivated by some nostalgia, if they make
a job function somewhat like classic incarnations, be FUN, and fit lore, I'll be
pretty happy![]()
I like the separation of classes having the new, non-traditional names where as Jobs have traditional FF names.
I'm happy rogue is named rogue and not Thief for that reason, it also leaves the possibility of Thief being a job branch off of Rogue.

I don't mind as long as it can get what it's trying to be out there.
Personally I don't mind the whole class -> job naming though I think if it was handled better it would be more accepted.
Paladin was always refered to as knight in jp, even in ffxiI'd like to let you know that in the Japanese version of FFXIV, Paladin is actually called, ナイト (lit. Knight). I believe it was named Paladin due to the fact that it was kind of changed to that in the previous English translations and it has "WHM" as a secondary to unlock the job.
As such, classic names for "jobs" would be intelligent design. Classes should be throw-away names like we have now.
As I understand, the common convention is that what we call 'Paladin' is literally just 'Knight' in JP, typically an upgraded version of 'Fighter' that can use white magic in some games, but 'Paladin' sounds cooler so we've been using it since IV. Except in V where it was 'Knight' again for some reason, but they still used Cover and were good at beating the crap out of things with swords and didn't have white magic. Meanwhile, 'Dark Knight' is literally called 'Magic Knight' or 'Demon Knight' depending on the translation? (I believe 'Demon Knight' is the more accurate intent, given well, you know, but yeah.) 'Warrior' used to be a downgraded Paladin (mostly in the original,) but it's been fleshed out as its own class (usually in the form of a Berserker or just straight up Warrior class).
Basically, Square's idea of how basic physical fighters should be and interact as class designs changes like every other damn game...
video games are bad

Classic all the way in my opinion.
But for this game specifically, classic for the jobs and new for the classes is perfectly fine with me.
And I'd really like to see some -ara, -ga, and -ja spells sooner or later (curaga, blizzara, firaja, etc.).

Remember we have a potentially unlimited number of levels to go with expansions : D
Cura could be coming to a WHM near you soon!
To be honest, "Paladin" is actually far more accurate to the real usage of the word in FFXIV than in most RPG's. Something a lot of people don't know, is the term "Paladin" actually refers (to my knowledge) to an elite sect of personal guards in France, back in... the 1600's, I believe. So really, being an off-shoot of "bodyguards for a French noble" is closer to "a bodyguard of the Sultana", than it is "light-wielding warrior".
Back on point, though... Like I said, not all of the New names have been home-runs, but I just think some of the "Classic" names just sound more generic than they ought to, and not sure they even fit the setting. Like I said, we're already dealing with White and Black Mages, and if they introduce Red and Blue Mages, I think it would just kind of detract from their individual flavor. And again... as much as I want a Dark Knight-style Class, if it's actually *CALLED* a Dark Knight, I don't think we'll ever live down the Batman references.
I prefer the classic names in general, but not if it requires twisting the lore around to justify them.
That said, they couldn't even come up with decent lore for Arcanist, so I guess classic or no, there's no exemption. :-/
