    (New)Paladin Gear Progression question

    Hello,

I came from an i91 Bard, but recently I wanted to focus on my Paladin who is currently level 45. Once he reaches 50, probably tomorrow, I will want to gear him up.

So as a fresh level 50 Paladin, what is the best way to go about gearing him up?
I currently have 1500/2000 soldiery (+450 more once weekly reset) and 1296/2000 Myth.

No other gears available/prepared for this fresh Paladin, so any veteran tanks/players out there can help me out with my gear progression based on my available currency?

    Thank You!

Hello there and welcome back to your PLD.

This is just my advice, I am nowhere near an elite PLD but I can give you my opinion. When gearing you need to, as you did with BRD, think of what stats are most important to you and how you want to build your PLD. For me and my build this is how I have spent so far:

    Lorica
    Shield
    Breeches
    Ring

I have unweathered the Shield, obtained a weathered Burtgang and am working on getting two sands to unweather the lorica and burtgang. At the same time I am working on getting:

    ST hands
    ST Head
    Belt
    Choker
Second ring (So one Noct and one Weathered Noct after I get another Oil from ST)

I definitely recommend getting the burtgang going if you do not plan on going the zodiac route. With all the folks out there that have their zodiac weapons, ex weapons, coil weapons, i90 isn't going to cut it. After I got my breeches I was about i94ish and would loose threat from time to time.

Since getting my Burtgang that doesn't happen any more. It is a initial investment but should last a while.

You could do a good mix of Soldiery and myth buys. Also 1st coil is super easy, you cold farm on BRD for stuff or use your PLD as well. If you hunt you could use seals for myth gear, but I don't recommend that as you can use it for logs for sands and oils.

This is my current set: Paladin

To spending options, with new soldiery earned you would be at 1950. With this you could get the two most expensive buys out of the way. Weathered Noct Lorica - 895 and Weathered Noct Breeches - 895 and would leave you with 160. With Myth you could go Head, Belt, bracelet and should be left with around 50.

So you would end up with:

    Myth head
    Sol. Body
    Myth belt
    Sol. Legs
    Myth Bracelet

This is just a suggestion and a good starting point. You could then farm Coil, CT, ST, Hunts for more gear and currency.

Again, this is just my opinion and not "the word" by any means. I hope it all makes sense and at least helps in some way.

    GL to you shield brother!

    Thank You Synestr!
    Much appreciated your feedback!

Yes, I was debating on Burtgang or Relic Weapon route. I have heard a lot that once you obtain Burtgang (even unweathered) it would help tremendously on enmity issue againsts folks who have much better weapon. I think I will get Burtgang and slowly working on my Relic as a personal side-quest during my free time.

By purchasing Burtgang, I should have a little over 1000 ST left, I will go ahead and purchase the chest piece (Lorica), the rest I will just farm Myth and until I can do higher end game content to obtain better gears.

    Thank You!

The left-hand stuff is pretty much always the most tome-efficient. I'd focus on the pieces you'll want to keep longest on the left side then move to accs. There's a couple good ST pieces out there to look for, use myth for things you need as a stop-gap. Focus on acc cap first then other stuff...don't get hung up on stacking parry.
Don't forget that you can do coil to farm up i90. There's lots of accuracy on that stuff.

The weapon will certainly help in enmity generation (more than any other upgrade), which might be a bit tough at the beginning. It's a good thing to get soon-ish. And probably the first thing I'd use a sand on. Plus then the relic is a more leisurely thing rather than a need-it-now upgrade.

If you know any crafters, melding vitality and Parry to i70 STR/DEX/Acc jewelry is pretty huge and relatively cheap, especially if you're going for the Noct Hoplon (which benefits more, defensively, from high str/dex/parry, than kite or small shields).

The most expensive part of making the jewelry are the 9 pieces of dungeon drop/FC seal items you need (animal fat for everything but the earrings, and peacock ore for the earrings). If you've got maxed out seals, that's enough for two pieces of jewelry, and the i70 stuff is so trivial to HQ that an FC mate that's leveled and geared the appropriate crafting class should be willing to do it for cheap or free if you get them the mats.

Melding the jewelry can be time consuming and expensive, though, depending on how overmelded you want to go. But if you've leveled the class yourself, you don't need the gear or cross class skills you'd need to make the thing.

If you fully overmeld only 1 piece with vit/parry, go with the choker. That'd be a much better piece for a tank looking to hit the accuracy cap than the Allagan choker, and if you view skill speed as pointless/detrimental, the only other options for pure tanking gear end game are really the ribbon and HA choker, or spending a small fortune on an i90 crafted choker and all of the III and IV materia you need to make it competitive with the Allagan choker, let alone better.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!
So with this week's Soldiery Tomes, I can afford both Burtgang Sword and Noct Hoplon, should I get both or should I leave shield out and get the Solidery Chest piece?

    Thank You!

Do you have a lvl50+ shield and chest now? The Lorica is the bigger upgrade if you were going from i90 in both places. You probably want to grab the relic stuff anyway and the i90 Holy shield is serviceable. If you want to spend no tomes you can get the onion or leviathan shield using your Bard to farm.
You can use the bard to farm up First-coil drops too.

Use your bard to get ramuh shield + ring

Craft i90 vit accessories, meld STR + w.e

    Burtgang > Chest > Ring > Pants > Boots > Head >>>>>>>>> glove = belt

    Hi All,

Thank you everyone for the constructive feedback, it's extremely helpful!
I thought about below approach for my fresh Paladin (it's based on everyone's feedback), please let me know if that's good or if I need to change few things.

    Approach:

    -Weapon [check]
    -Weathered Burtgang
    -1040 Solidery Tomes left

    -Shield [Working in Progress]
-Will purchase a GC shield if they have one
-Will work on my Relic Weapon and Shield
-Already have a Oil and 3 Mist prepared for Zenith

    -Right Side [check]
-i90 Accessories, missing a Ring due to dupicate Ring (unique) not allowed.
-As right now I have roughly 1600+ Myth left

    -Left Side [Working In Progress]
    -Lorica [Chest] with Solider Tomes
-Rest of the pieces will be i90 Myth Set

    Gear Progress
After above progression, what should be my next focus in Gear Progression?

    Thank You everyone!
