EDIT: One last question about minions. Can you buy them anywhere? Or are they only given as awards? Or both?

Some are sold by specific vendors (for instance, the vendor that sells starting racial gear in each city also sell the wayward hatchling, cherry bomb and mammet #003 minions).

The majority though are either quested, gained automatically after reaching a certain point in the storyline (like the windup airship), achievement rewards, veteran rewards for subscribing to the game for a certain length of time, gained through seasonal or special events (like the Shantotto mininon), or from vouchers you have to redeem on your account that were only offered as bonuses for short periods (such as the Cait Sith doll for preordering the game prior to release, or the windup Dalamud and Bahamut which were included with the soundtrack Bluray albums. Usually you can only attain a certain minion in one way, meaning if you miss out on it you're out of luck sadly.
