Tales from the Calamity Lore Discussion

So the first part of the five-part "Tales from the Calamity" series was released on the lodestone. This first one focused on our favourite Admiral: Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn.

So, there's a few things I'd like to talk about this one specifically. Firstly - I really like how they're hammering in what forgetting the Warriors of Light was like. It's not that they forgot their existence entirely, but they remembered that they forgot - at least Merlwyb did. This was sliiiightly glossed over in the main game - Alphie mostly talked about this.

Secondly, some lore stuff about Merlwyb is nice - her Chocobo named Victory (Vicky) died at Carteneau - and I like that it showed Merlwyb getting injured. She's so strong generally it's interesting to put her through that experience.

One small question: Who are these Pirate captains who keep getting mentioned? I didn't start in Limsa and don't know the starting storyline (not played it yet), but were these characters and crews we knew about before.

Just in general about this series of short stories: it's pretty obvious that we'll get one about Raubahn and one about Kan-E (an insight into her mind will be interesting). Who do you think the other two will be about? There's a few candidates: Gaius, Louisoix, Cid, Minfilia, even Lahabrea are among those who could have stories told about them. So who do you think will be the focus? One of these? Someone not mentioned?

Really looking forward to more of these story vignettes in the coming weeks ^_^.

The pirate captains that were mantioned are the leaders of the "Sanguine Sirens"(Rhoswen) and the "Krakens Arms"(Carvallain). Two pirate crews that are still keeping up with the pirate ways to some extent; basicaly by robbing garlean ships that they come across. Eynzahr is Merlwybs second-in-command.

It's one of the things I wish we had more of, like wow does with stories and books.

Rhoswyn wanted to give Carvallain a gift and he rejects it because he thinks it is a trap. Sounds like this could actually be the reason she fell in love with him

I only loved Merlwyb more after reading that first one. Everything I hear or see about her and Limsa in general confirms to me I made the right choice starting as MRD. Love that city state so much.

And we now know that the Victory in the dry docks is not just named for the concept of victory against all odds, but also for Merlwyb's faithful steed. Poor bird. Great tidbit, though. It'll color how I look at that ship from now on.

I found their valentine's day story absolutely adorable so I was so happy to see that bit about how Carvallain was the one who saved Rhoswen and "swept her up onto the saddle like a bloody knight of Ishgard." XD I SO want that in a cutscene now! Complete with the trading insults on chocoback as he rides away with her from the danger.

Poor Rhoswen though in that story, fighting for her dead crewmates. "-pirates weep with their swords, and their tears are red." Some great lines come from both of these short stories.

And I certainly wasn't expecting Nanamo to be the focus of the second tale. Or to be involved in the actual summoning of the Twelve. And then calming the crowd like the little ball of awesome she is. (And she was only 16 at the time?!)

Also, how you end up with 5 brothers running the THM guild is now explained! And they seem primed to be the Sultana's allies if/when we get into stories that deal more with the city states' internal matters. I am looking forward to that.

OKAY BUT EVERYONE IS MISSING THE REAL IMPORTANT THING IN THE SECOND ONE:

Raubahn's adopted son, Pipin Tarupin.

Where is he why have we not seen him who is he tell us everything, Ferne, show us a picture, something. PLEASE.

About the above, so I'm not the only person who was surprised he has an adopted son? lol Ok, good.

Though I really feel like I've read that name before. Like that NPC does exist in the game somewhere, and I ran across him but didn't have reason to take much notice. Anyone know if he's around somewhere?


So far, I'm loving this whole anniversary thing, really. Its so great that I could actually see the characters in the game acting like this. In all the hubub of becoming a Warrior of Light and Eikon-slayer, I guess I didn't really stop to notice how well they'd been characterized and how much I'd taken it for granted.

And these stories prove that characterization and depth is on purpose and the devs actually care and havn't forgotten about it and it gives me such optimism about future expansions! ^_^

You can go thru the game without noticing much by way of lore, but if you actually stop to look there is so much hidden depth, its nuts. Especially for an MMO.

I can't wait for the next short story!

I can't wait for more! Especially Kan E Senna! Gridania hasn't had much development when we think about it.

Ul'Dah has political turmoil. The plot twists were nice!

I feel like the second part of the End of an Era CS should include this description via visuals. The way the storyline has looked the GC leaders have looked weak and second to the Scions (who look weak enough). Cutscenes like this would really help re-establish that badassery they once had or atleast Melwyb and Raubhan (since Kan-E-Senna is more of a pacifist badass) had. But ah well lol definitely looking forward to more chapters of this.

I have a feeling that when they expand the GC storyline, you'll probably get out in the field with them. How else am I going to be the Flame Champion?
...And the promotional video for that should be EoaE/ANB bad-ass quality.
