Any tips or things I should keep in mind as a rookie armorer? Are there certain goals I should be aiming at?

Make sure you keep up with your quests- you'll often get a really nice crafting piece for at, or close to, your level.

As an Armorer you want to look for gear with Craftsmanship and/or Control on it, and try as best you can to keep your pieces up to date.

Also, leves/provisions! Especially if you can HQ the needed items, leves and provisions (though provisions can only be done once a day) are some amazing XP. Leves can be found around the major cities and a few of the bigger towns/cities out in the world, and provisions become available after ranking up some with your chosen Grand Company.

Level Miner. This is true of Armorer Blacksmith and Goldsmith, your costs to level can become profit if you level Miner along with your crafting.

Try to get your other DoH classes to at least 15 as well. several of the cross class skills with make it 4862143987129481 times easier to reach the high quality mark.
