What's the point of fishing?

Genuine question here. I'm currently leveling it up just to relax a bit after grinding pld, brd and sch to 50 and then grinding even more for some gear, but if there's a point to fishing other than just for fun I'd still like to know!

I plan on leveling it up to 50 either way, but if there isn't much in terms of profit I might level another craft on the side as my gil maker.

Ingredients for cooking. Desynthing fish for crafting materials you can't get any other way. There's profit to be had. Whether it's better/more fun/more cromulent than other sources of profit is left as an exercise for the reader.

PS, Fishing is DoL, not DoH. There's a lot of cross-over, but you miiiiight get slightly better answers in the right forum.

Fishing only really works as a steady source of income if you combine it with culinarian. Most raw fish tend to go for a rather small amount of gil, whereas on the final products quite some profit may still be made. On the other hand though, with the low price many culinarian resources tend to go for, you may very well skip out on the gathering yourself. Simply buy in cheap and make the profits.

decent gilz in fishing, if you play with a controller that has vibration you don't even need to be in the same room as your console/pc unlike crafting.

you need to be max melded and spend alot of gil to catch the 50k+(used to be 150k and will be again) fish that are for desynth leveling so don't piss away the gil you make while you level.

with pretty much no effort or thinking you can easily keep your combat classes eating the best food and popping pots as soon as the timers are up, if you put in the hours maybe buy a house for yourself.

catching a fish takes around 30 sec + desynth = 40 sec work for 1 or 2 shards/crystals
I'm pretty sure mining them is faster

If you're going to be fishing anyways, might as well consider turning them into shards. I highly doubt anyone would fish just for the shards.
I was just mentioning it as an alternative to dropping them or selling to an NPC. Shards do sell a bit more frequently than most fish.
