Thanks for contributing Zenaku, but i'm afraid "opening your ports" is not the solution to this problem.

Everyone getting d/c and lag problem come with there ISP not working right with FFXIV opening the ports help if it does not then wait for the problem to be fix there not much you can do i hope SE read this topic so they can help and fix this.
I live in FL USA and i have no lag problems.

I don't think it happens to anyone all the time and we can all tweak our settings to some degree, but there are high traffic times when lag is a more likely to be an issue. I'm happy for you that you have been lucky so far.Everyone getting d/c and lag problem come with there ISP not working right with FFXIV opening the ports help if it does not then wait for the problem to be fix there not much you can do i hope SE read this topic so they can help and fix this.

I know how to avoid it. The point of this thread is to gather feedback from people who can't due to latency. And i'm not only talking about the moles here.
It can be bad in the UK have you ever tried getting into a Behest at Horizon during JP primetime, it's not even worth trying as the Behest is usually full before the warden spawns on my screen.
I've had this problem (UK player). The port is definitely open but it doesn't help. Sometimes synthesising seems to be in slow motion and grinding is mostly impossible. During battle I've experienced the delay in actions that other people have mentioned in this thread. It really is unacceptable.

This problem is edgy because many people don't understand how it works and just get used to it, thinking it's normal. The latency however is a real issue which i'm suspecting isn't only caused by the server location, but also by the game software and the kind of servers SE is using. Whether the game is international or not these sorts of latency issues are really not supposed to be there in an AAA mmorpg or, at least, not so heavily.
I'll just mention that when SE started recruiting server staff right after the start of FFXIV service, solid knowledge of chinese language was a requirement for application. I'll let you make your own conclusions about that.
This. So much this. The latency the game offers is not something you expect of a server localized in Japan. This problem is edgy because many people don't understand how it works and just get used to it, thinking it's normal. 3 seconds of latency is what you get when your server is at the end of a yogurt phone system set up in a little Indian village linked by a satellite dish to the ISS and then back to Russia before getting to Europe. And I don't even think this could get us up to 3 seconds. I'm serious here, even with the yogurt phone part.
A route from Europe to Japan is about 300ms. It should be even less from the US.
Also latency between Europe and Japan has no reason not to be stable. Having a 50ms range of variation at most. Going from 300ms to 3000ms is definitely not a problem due to the network link.
There is definitely an issue with SE servers or network code. This issue probably gets bigger with increased the latency (and this could explain why it mostly affect Eu people), but it's not caused by it.
Also for whoever tried to invoke it, port opening has nothing to do with this. We are not using a P2P software here, SE servers are fully visible to our game clients.

According to several gaming mag articles I've read the past few years SE is notorious for two things. 1. they patch old servers rather than upgrading--to the point where they are basically connecting through the electronic equivalent of bubble gum and duct tape and 2. they refuse to decentralize their servers the way American games do, so if a problem exists at their central site, EVERYONE is affected e.g. when the earthquake had service down. Rather than building redundancy into the system, which would admittedly cost money, as would upgrading servers, as would a lot of things they choose NOT to do, they skate by and rely on our loyalty to the name to get by. It's wearing thin. Very thin.This. So much this. The latency the game offers is not something you expect of a server localized in Japan.

A friend brought her computer over today and we played today. I noticed while running circles around her that on her screen it looks like I'm moving in a triangle. I know issues like this never tend to be completely resolved in MMOs, however I do remember FFXI's lag was much less noticeable. I made videos of multiple people running around someone in FFXI, in FFXIV it is impossible. After realizing this earlier today I have noticed responsiveness issues all over.
I live in the United States so I don't know if I'm experiencing the same issue as the European latency problem. I know nothing about game programming and I understand FFXIV must be more complex and probably takes up a lot more space than FFXI did. I just wish for an optimization of the entire game to make it run more smoothly.
