Well in the FFXI system you spent a ridiculous amount of time tediously guessing at the list price. The system worked by having the buyer offer X amount of gil until they were at or over the list price of any of the available items. Whichever seller had the item listed lowest got the sale, regardless of what the buyer paid. In this system you could list for 1 gil to be assured that you item sold first and just hope that a buyer didn't try to buy it for lower than the going price, let alone the 1 gil you offered it for. The price history showed what people paid, not what people listed. Also there were listing fees and items expired after a week, so if you listed something very expensive and it didn't sell you'd be out a decent chunk of gil for nothing.

    Don't adjust price. Adjust quantity.

System is fine for a mmo. Simple and easy.

Check prices of other vendors AND look at sales history.

You can then see how often it sells, the average price, and see if the product you want to sell is currently over flooded by other vendors.

Then you put your price and forget about it, if you did it correctly you don't have to correct prices that often. I only do it once a week if needed.

i put up 20 different itme at a time, sometimes more, yesterday, everything finally sold. some of those items were there for 2 weeks, and got me quite a bit of gil. if you cant wait for a good price to sell, lower the price. there is no sense in trying to change the system because you cant get the sale you want in the time you want, dont be so impatient. thats why we have undercutters, they dont care how much they get for it, they just want it fast, thats why some things are getting cut by 80k. if its a good price for an item, it will sell, you just have to wait.

And how would you sort that list? If all prices are the same, only quantities differ, the buyer will never purchase from any but the "first" person in the list with a desired quantity.
Do not forget, much of the complained about undercutting is as much about being at the "top" of the list, as it is about the getting the sale first.

i wont lie, i undercut from time to time. im putting up a stack of 99 for the same price as a stack of 30, im not going to get it sold for a while. so, my price for a full stack can be anywhere from 30+ gil, depending on the normal price and how much is being sold at one time.

When you set your price, try that : "would I buy it for this price ??"
Sometimes things don't sell because the price is to high for what it's worth... For example, some item doesn't sell at all when they're above 15k and sells really fast when they're 10k.
If an item doesn't sell for a week : the price is too high or there is really not enough demand compared to the offer (both are more or less linked).

Like a lot of aspects of this game, your rewards are greater the more patience you have.

Hot sellers on my server are the GC Crafting items that you also get dropped from the harder dungeons. Currently their low prices are around 4k, going up to 10k.

Now if I want some gil in the next half an hour, I guess I'm gonna pop them up at 4k. But actually if I list at 10k, they will invariably sell out overnight; even quicker at the weekend. And sure, if I want some lazy gil, I'll buy up everything under 5 or 6k and relist it in sets of 9, but tbf there's more fun to be had on Roulette, Desynths, Hunts, w/e your poison, so I don't.

The marketplace system is great. The only two ways that I can see for it to be made any better are:
    1) Be able to buy items from the sell window at your retainer (for when you catch sight of that really low-priced item you want to snap up quick).
    2) Send the Market Board data to an interface within Libra Eorzea so current listings can be viewed from outside the game on a website and an app - at the very least make it possible for third-parties to be able to collect this data easily.

    The market is just fine.

Think of the Marketboard as your very own small business to build your fortune. If you have all your jobs at 50 you can essentially print money by gathering materials and then making basically whatever you want. Most of us don't have everything at 50 (I sure don't) so....

For the jobs you don't have at 50, craft everything at least once for the bonus XP and if you don't need it, throw it up on the Marketboard. As things are sold immediately use newly crafted items to top up your retainers and make sure each one always has 20 items on the market.

Yes you should undercut WHEN NECESSARY. When is it necessary? Look at the value of the item. Check sale history. Is it in high demand? Does it require rare/expensive materials? If the lowest price on a Marketboard item is twice it's value, ignore the lowest price listed and list the RIGHT price. If the lowest price on a Marketboard item is half it's value, ignore the lowest price and list the RIGHT price. The one that makes sense.

You can make these decisions when your retainers are both topped up with 20 items. You aren't desperate to sell one item. Gil is constantly flowing in.

Once I started keeping my retainers topped up at 20 items I find myself constantly seeing the message that items are being sold. Because of that I can sit tight on items that I know won't sell immediately because some desperate soul is selling the same item at a loss.

TL;DR Keep your retainers full. If you have 2 items up on the Marketboard you're going to be desperate and lose gil. If you have 40 items on the Marketboard, and KEEP it topped up, gil will flow and you can exhibit patience.
