Not right in front of my face. I fly up so I can see about 5 of the spawn points. Then discard. On six occasions it spawned on the 50th discard.
Now that sounds more plausible.
In my own exp it's the same with Tokage, never take over 10 to spawn, but I've never threw away more than 20 times each attempt so I can't say a thing. Ivory sole farmers dumped their inventories of unneeded fishes is a factor worth considering too.
Edit: Can anyone tell me what people know about double tap/triple tap? That mean you have to repeat the spawn trigger again once or twice, usually from another player, for a mark to spawn. Is it real or just a myth?

Likely a confirmation bias based myth born from instances where someone completed the spawn condition but spawn timer wasn't up yet and someone else then completed the spawn condition after the spawn timer had just completed.
myth I have spawned many s ranks alone and with only 1 attempt at it.
S&L spawned after 50 discards.
Edit: Other two spawned after 39 discards & 23 discards.

I spawned S&L with 22 discards earlier today and there were only 3 other people in the zone and I shouted the S rank in shout instead of ls at first to see if anyone else in the zone was trying to spawn it at the same time and got no reaction so pretty sure it was only me in the zone trying at the time.
I mean 50 discards is a good number to go with as it seems if its not ready to pop it wont no matter how many items you dump on it, I usually just toss 99 every hour or so and when it does pop it usually only takes between 20-60 sometimes less.
Popped S&L again with 64 discards so going to call this exactly 50 thing as nonsense
I popped our two most recent Salt & Light on the 48th and 49th items. I'm leaning towards the 50 items as being plausible. Still testing.
Edit: Spawned our 3rd S+L on the 50th item.

I just spawned a SaL in a deserted zone with exactly 50 discards, so another confirmation on that.
Avatars are people too.
