I wouldn't know. In my experience looks have always been a very important factor in a players' attachment to a character.
And players' attachment to their character has always been an important factor in that player staying to play a game.
i believe the changes mentioned above will make more players staying in the game then say, "hey look I can pick a blue or yellow belt for my char! coo!Yes, let's have the art team focus on making 10 redundant items just so everyone can be a unique little snowflake.
Instead of, like, adding entirely new equipment, or new zones, or new monsters, or anything else that would be significantly more impactful in the game than having a bunch of same-y crap to make you feel pretty.
They already offer multiple colors of a lot of items to give people some flexibility, and frankly that's plenty. Dev resources are not unlimited, and people feeling pretty should be an INCREDIBLY low priority.
I don't know about other people. But if everyone ends up being dressed pretty much in the same way like in many other MMORPG, my reasons to stay will be sensibly reduced.
I love the diversity I see in FFXIV at the moment.
