    jobs in the future?

Me and a friend were talking about older FFs and job progression, and of course XIV came into the discussion, given that this year (hopefully!) we'll be looking at our first expansion. Would it be a yay or a nay in people's eyes if our soul crystals could be augmented somewhere down the line to allow upgrades to our jobs? Examples of which include:

    Conjurer > White Mage > White Wizard/Devout
    Arcanist > Scholar > Geomancer

    Thaumaturge > Black Mage > Black Wizard/Sage
    Pugilist > Monk > Black Belt/Master
    Arcanist > Summoner > Evoker
Lancer > Dragoon > ...Holy Dragoon? (rofl)/Dragon Knight
    Archer > Bard > Ranger
    Thief > Ninja > Assassin

    Marauder > Warrior > Viking/Berserker
    Gladiator > Paladin > Knight/Templar

    ...Thoughts?

Mmmn, I think so too. Said friend added something interesting to it as well; he stated interest in the job upgrades being difficult tasks. Not SE's current Thing of grinding until it happens; more 1.0's Thing with AF.

In 1.0, certain AF fights like Always Bet On Black (BLM), Return Of The King Of Ruin (WAR) and such were actually quite difficult fights, intended for party participation. Friend thinks job upgrades would be best delivered via difficult fights you can't just faceroll your way through. That idea, I think, would be kind of awesome.

What benefit would these "advanced" jobs have? Aren't they just the same job with a different name? 3 of them actual exist as the same class with a fancier name (Devout/Sage/Master) and one of them is the same name (Paladin/Knight、 which currently conflicts with the Japanese name of ナイト). I believe that these advanced jobs would be largely unnecessary since any buff you can allot to the advanced jobs, you can just attach to the original job.

Not really. Using devout / white wizard as an example, you'd look at a significant MND boost and new abilities as part of that job upgrade, which a white mage wouldn't have. (Think how a level 50 conjurer stands against a level 50 whm) Keeping that in mind, it might be an awesome chance as well for abilities used in 1.0 (Sacred Prism for example) to be reworked into the game.

Not necessarily, you can viably take WAR into a DPS Dark Knight by changing stats with an upgraded stone, and even change cross class skills (DRG anyone?). Or having a Kancer tank, by upgrading soul stone and change cross class abilities. Those are only a couple examples.

Because of their jumps and dives, I could only support this if they upgraded to Holy Diver, and the appropriate music played whenever you used any abilities.

Mrrrr, I'm actually all for the jobs being placed into roles because of 1.0. In Tanaka-Era 1.0, we were allowed to crossclass entirely freely and place stat points wherever we wanted, to much greater effect. If a GLA for example dumped all of his/her points into PIE and MND, s/he could be a competent healer for party content, and a completely awful tank. 1.0 had a lot of those- THM tanks, GLA healers - it was terrible in parties because it was complete and total pot luck when you got a GLA if it was an actual tank or a special snowflake - much less if your THM was an int THM or a vit THM. It was really, really awful and one of the worst ideas Tanaka had.

In 2.0, Roles at the moment are boring, because the games at vanilla stage and all the bases (DPS, Healer and Tank) are being covered - exactly as XI was at launch with WAR, PLD (tank) WHM, RDM (healer) MNK, BLM, (DPS) When the game matures, when new content is out, expansions and such will give us new jobs with less basic functions.
