Giving incentive without forcing people is good. Initially you wanted people to stop forcing you to use the zerg method but in doing so you were trying to force them to use your preferred method. Incentive is a happy middle ground.

Trash mobs dropping rares is good. They could also do it like Phantasy Star Universe where at the end of any given mission if you killed all the creatures you got a better rank. Obviously they wouldn't use the same method but the same kind of thing stands, have a chest(s) pop once all monsters in the dungeon have been killed at the end or something like that.
