Can someone explain to me the Atma quest/chain?

So once you get the quest called up in arms, you go around to 12 zones/areas and you do fates in that area UNTIL you get the drop..and then move on to the next.

is that the gist of it?

what about getting the novus and the other one

After you get the 12 pieces you talk to the quest giver and it starts the animus quest line. You purchase 9 books which have specific enemies, fates, dungeons and leve quests to go through. Each book costs 1500 myth.

Novus requires.. stuff. Someone else will elaborate as I'm not doing this for the time being.

After doing another quest and spending another chunk of myth (1,500?) on a Sphere Scroll, Novus requires you to collect 75 pieces of Alexandrite from maps. You can obtain these maps by doing a quest in Mor Dhona that has you do an Expert Roulette every day. You can also obtain them by spending 800 mythology tomestones.

Once you have an alexandrite, you can meld materia to your Novus. There's a whole lot of stat stuff I'm not gonna get in to, but you get to choose what you want. The problem is that you have a chance to fail (increasing as you place more and more in it) and are forced to use a certain amount of each tier. It can be exceedingly expensive if you want certain stats.

After you finish your Sphere Scroll, you take it back to the NPC to receive your new, special Novus.

...from there, you'll need to return to the quest giver to initiate another quest chain which requires you to buy 3 Superior Enchanted Inks (500 Myth each).

With them, you'll get a special key item, a scroll in which you'll have to infuse up to 75 Materias that will serve to boost/overwrite any and all secondary stats for your future Novus (each Materia, regardless of its quality will increase a SS by 1, but as you keep infusing it'll ask you to use better tiered ones)...but that's not all.
In order to infuse a single Materia, you'll need an item called Alexandrite which can be obtained by different ways (the most common involving a daily quest that gives you a map to get it).

You'll need up to 75 Alexandrites in order to fully infuse that scroll.

Once done, go back to the original quest giver and boom. Novus.

Can get Alexandrites from FATEs, from map (bought with 800 myth or get from daily quest) and from spending Allied Seals gained through hunt (200 AS/Alexandrite).

after reading all of these, I think I'd rather quit playing FFXIV.

You don't absolutely have to pursue this quest line though, you still have the sol weapons & high allagan weapons. I opted to stop at animus as novus requires too much work and I'm not doing anything in game that requires a very high ilvl weapon anyway.

Yep, exactly. If you're casual (like myself), your Zenith is enough to do 90% of the stuff ingame.
If you're a bit more into raiding, then Coil will net you either an unidentified tomestone (turn in for weathered weaponry) or your high allagan weapon. You can also go with the primals route and take out EX primals for the wave and thunder weapons, some of which are on farm mode now.

    Up to you
I personally don't have any interest in the Zenith weapons line, as it's just a massive boring grind. I'd rather try my luck at primals or Coil (if I have time), but to each their own.

Atma and Animus are the most time consuming. Now that I'm on novus I'm 22/75 alexandrites in and it is much less time consuming. If you're not into doing around 750 fates and spending a ton of myth and then doing 27 fates 27 dungeons 27 leves and killing 1,000 enemies for like 40k myth I'd say don't bother. Just get a wave weapon and move on :-/
