Let your party know upfront that you're new to the dungeon and that you'd appreciate advice and input. As a gladiator, you are the tank and people will expect you to manage hate. So take a couple of minutes to hover over each skill and get a good feel for what it does. Ideally, you are pulling a pack of mobs with shield lob. As they rush you, flash 2-3 times to establish some really firm hate on them. Then use your hate build combos on them to make it solid. If someone's not slept mobs, you can then move to another one with the hate combo to firm up hate on it. More flash. Chase down anything that goes after your healer or dps. You'll make it.

If you're being kicked as a tank, most likely people don't realize you are still new and possibly assume you are trolling them. Communication really is key in resolving this for you. If they are giving you advice/directions, take the time to inquire what they mean. Use the translator if you don't have a keyboard available to you.

The nice thing about FF14 is that you can pick up a new class whenever you want. Gladiator and paladin are tank classes responsible for managing enmity, positioning, damage mitigation, and general leadership. Maybe you'd be more interested in monk or dragoon, they are melee classes that focus on positions and more complex rotations. Melee dps enjoys shorter queue times than ranged dps as well.

At the same, don't give up gladiator if it's a class you want to learn to play. There are plenty of fun, helpful people in the community. Find someone you like playing with that will help you through the initial learning curve.

From what I've experienced, the community seems really helpful. I'd say you should try joining a Free Company. You can get advice, gear, and people who'd be more than willing to help get your dungeons finished. Good luck!

For me being a person whom this is their first stab at an MMO. I had no idea what a tank was or how to play it, but I figured it out, with help from people in game and a little research on the side. Like someone said in an early post, if you inform them you are new, most, not all but most people will be glad to help you out. I've only had one bad instance so far, though they didn't kick me and we never wiped the dungeon.

Tanking can be a bit overwhelming at first, but I got through that phase, and now I'm having a blast doing it. Once you figure it out and level up, you can still hack and slash. But you also need to be the leader and protect the party. Which means you need to pay attention to things. Just treat people how you would like to be treated, ask for help, take any and all advice.

If you kicked from a dungeon, oh well. Re-que it in the duty finder and do it again. Practice makes perfect as they say. If tanking isn't right for you, then just switch to a DPS class, and carry on.

    thank you everyone.

i played eve online for like 8-9 yrs. the roles are somewhat differnet to those in FFXIV as is the game play style.
will go and find a class i can use and abuse to its full.

it also seems a waste of time keeping the gladiator, i spent two weeks of my months subscription getting to lvl 25.
but now i am going to have to spend another two weeks finding a role i can play, and building lvl up so i can finish the storyline quests.
that has already been started with a different role ie: my gladiator.

i am more worried that i have to start quests all over again, and hope that they are not locked to a role.

You won't be doing any of them again, once they are done thats it. If you switch classes the game just keeps progressing from where you left off. Unless you create a different character and start a new game.

The only questline that you'll have to start over are your class quests, since you'd be leveling a different class. So you don't have to worry about your main scenario quests or any non-class related side quests you've done, and since you've already got gladiator leveled a bit, some of its abilities might be available and useful to you cross-class. That and you can always go back and pick it up again from where you left off once you're more familiar with the game.

Are you on console? If so, do you have a USB keyboard? Communication is really key here. Tell people you are learning and ask questions. If you don't want to tank level a dps class and you can always go back to tanking later. You also gain experience faster with a second class so it will be much quicker to level.

Maybe just switch to a dps role for starters. And if you do don't choose Marauder (axe guy) it is another tank

To summarize game is around trinity :

Tank (takes damage, hold aggro/enmity on all ennemies) - Blue icon in party list
Healer (keeps team alive) - Green icon in party list
DPS (classes meant mainly for damage and support) - Red icon in party list

In dungeons you get 1 tank, 1 healer, 2 dps

But you could stick with your gladiator.
1/ try to have your equipment up to date with your level, means spending some gil to buy some on the market board
2/ look carefully at explanation of your skills, specially those marked "generate additional enmity", and those that are part of combo (if you do skill A first then when you do Skill B it will have additional effects)
3/ at 1st dungeons try this when you are pulling a group of enemies :
    - Target one and use Shield Lob
    - Run to the group and when they are near you use Flash Twice
    - Try to place yourself so you are facing all enemies because you don't block or parry from behind
    - Start using combos Fast Blade then Savage Blade
    - Switch between enemies and land combos on them
    - use flash from time to time
    - use your CDs, at your level it is Rampart, Fight or Flight, Convalescence

This enough for the first dungeons.
