    Making quick money

Which Gathering skill should I level to make some decent money quickly?

Let me put that into numbers since decent likely means different things to different people, I have 40k gil and 5 level 50s so I am dirt poor.

I don't wanna use my DoM or DoW to make money I have enough to do on them just a gatherer to mess around on for an hour or so after RL work.

    1) So with that explained and back story please give me some advice Fishing / Mining / Botany which one should I level to play casually for an hour or two at night in order to make a few hundred k gil.

    2) What should I be gathering with the suggested class to make this gil?

    3) How effective is it in your opinion? I have had Petrified log on AH for a week and every single day I check I am undercut and mine never sell I don't want that situation.

    Thank you

I can't think of any item you can gather where you won't find yourself in this situation. Your best bet is gathering as many of the unspoiled materials as you can and selling them. It isn't enormous money but it's steady and sells well. Things like Gold Ore, Crawler Cocoons, etc. That's as close as you're going to get I'm afraid, the entire market boards is an undercutting wonderland.

If somebody did know a secret item that sold well and was never undercut, they probably shouldn't (wouldn't) share it though.

the only steady income from a gathering job that never changes and always sells is Crystals of varying levels. every crafter will always need shards / crystals / clusters. however you cant just check the MB once a day since as the poster above said there will always be someone to undercut you. Selling them in smaller groups will net you some leeway on pricing tho since people are willing to pay a slight markup in order to not have to buy 500 when they only need 50

i would suggest choosing which gathering job you want based of what crafting job/jobs you might be interested in lving later. the crafter is what is gonna make you more money, and you can lv a craft for free if you have the appropriate gather. such as armorer/blacksmith - mining, culnarian - botany/fishing, weaver - botany, aclhemist - botany, etc, etc. The only one that doesnt rely on a gatherer is leatherworking. YOu can make money off of gathering but you can make more money if you take those gathered materials an craft them into something worth more.

I'd agree with you in a way DoubleT. Crafters CAN make more money from a single crafted item, but it's got to be taken into account that for every crafter making one item, there are another x amount of crafters needing the materials they can't be bothered to go gather themselves, who are willing to pay for the fact.

What I do as a multi crafter/gatherer is whenever i'm going to gather items i need for a craft, or levelling up a craft, i will gather the items i need, then gather another stack of them to sell.

For example, levelling up my carpenter:

Needed LOTS of walnut lumber (i pretty much levelled up from 30 to 50 on these lol). So, i gathered 500 of the logs for myself, and gathered another 1000 for sale purposes, of which i turned half of them into HQ Walnut Lumber to sell (there's another carpenter leve that needs JUST these lol.) Sold them in stacks of 100, put more up when the last stack sold. Add into it the reward from the levequest i was grinding, (oak logs), which i put up for sale as i didn't need them, and i made a pretty penny.

So aye, gathering has it's worth, especially now with desynth, people are crying out for shards/crystals/clusters and even NQ's of materials.

Crystals sell pretty decently just from low level miners/botanists. I leveled my fisher to 50 because it was relaxing and it doesn't get any easier than that lol...Mahi-mahi sells pretty decently on the MB with a properly melded fisher!

Starting out as MIN/BOT shards would net you the most money, but they're only level 1 so you can't actually get experience from mining/ harvesting them for long. Crystals are level 30, and clusters are level 50 unspoiled nodes (single use respawning for 9 minutes every 72 minutes -- 3 hours per Eorzean day). There are lots of things to mine or harvest that sell reasonably well. You'd have to change what you're gathering from time to time to actually continue leveling. Once you hit 50, you can gather darksteel ore, gold ore, clusters, spruce logs, and crawler cocoons for decent money. Unfortunately none of the items that they've added since launch are useful or sell well.

Honestly, any of the DoL will do it if you watch the market.
The easiest would be Miner or Botanist, you can sell raw mats, crystals, shards, etc for a nice price.
Fishermen is a bit tricky since many things don't require the use of fish nearly as much as say, Iron Ore.

Bottom line, go with the one you like best. If you watch the market and are careful about how much you undercut you will make money.
I found that selling smaller stacks or singles will get you gil faster.
For example, I sell Gold Ore in stacks of x3 because you need x3 of them (plus x1 Copper Ore) to make a Rose Gold Nugget.
It sells a lot faster because if someone only needs one or two nuggets they don't have to buy 20 gold ores.
Likewise, if I sell gems, I will sell them in stacks of 5-10 and singles.

Another thing you can do is sell items that people use for leves. When I sell Ignus Snails, I will sell either singles or stacks of x3 because you would need 3 Ingus Snails to do a turn in leve.

    People will pay for convenience.
Another thing you want to do is make sure to check the sale history on each item. That way you will know the average price of an item and you can price your accordingly.

Lastly, if you level your retainer as a botanist or miner, you can send it out to collect crystals and shards via ventures. ^^
    Best of luck!
