If the old, pointless content which offers little in terms of enjoyment and reward were really so popular, they would still be done.

This argument isn't based on reality.

The old content could be the most fun thing on the face of the Earth and it would still be ignored. People aren't doing hunts because they're "fun", they're doing them because they give, by far, the best rewards.
