    New level 50 fisher

Hi everyone! I decided I like fishing so I got my fishing class to level 50 today. My friend has made me most of the HQ stuff, but there's one thing I'm so confused about.

I try searching for guides what to meld and stuff but it's mostly nonsense to me since I know squat about materia.

So could anyone link a good guide that is up to date with the patch, or explain it to me (explain it like im like 10 years old) what to meld and in what order and you know the stuff!

    Thanks in advance!

As a Fisher, you want to put as much Gathering and Perception onto your gear as your gear will allow. Each piece of gear has its own cap on how much Gathering and Perception you can put on it. Each piece of gear can be melded with up to five pieces of Materia, but after the first one or two melds, melding additional materia gets harder and harder - and each time you fail, you lose the Materia you were trying to meld. This can get very expensive.

Here's an example. The HQ Fisher's shirt starts with 64 Gathering, 32 Perception, and 3 GP. Through experimentation, players have learned that by adding Materia, these stats can be increased by at most +11 Gathering, +6 Perception, and +1 GP. (Fisher's don't care about GP, though, so never meld that!)

Fisher's Shirt comes with two Materia slots, which means that you can meld two Materia into it with no trouble at all. You can still add more after the two, but your chance of success drops drastically for each additional Materia. For example, if you are trying to add a Gatherer's Guile I Materia (which adds +3 Perception) as your third materia. The chance of success is 45%, which means a 55% chance of failure. If you fail, you lose the Materia, and need to buy a new one to try again. If you are trying to add a Gatherer's Guile Materia I as your fourth materia, your odds of success are only 24%, and if you're adding it as your fifth Materia, your odds of success are a scary 14%. Players can spend a LOT of time and money trying to add a fifth Materia to gear, even if they are using Materia that's pretty cheap.

Here's a list of gear, along with how much stats you can meld into each piece. I've also included a suggested meld - however, that suggested meld uses high level materia that may be very expensive. If you don't have a lot of money, it may be better to use a lot of smaller materia, rather than the big ones I've listed.

    - HQ Body: Has Gathering +64, Perception +32, GP +3
    Meldable Gathering: 11
    Meldable Perception: 6
Suggested Meld: Gatherer’s Guile IV (Perception +6), Gatherer’s Guerdon IV (Gathering +6), OVERMELD Gatherer’s Guerdon III (Gathering +5)

    - HQ Hands: Has Gathering +48, GP +3
    Meldable Gathering: 8
    Meldable Perception: 4
Suggested Meld: Gatherer’s Guerdon III (Gathering +5), Gatherer’s Guile II (Perception +4), OVERMELD Gatherer’s Guerdon I (Gathering +3)

    - HQ Legs: Has Gathering +32, Perception +3
    Meldable Gathering: 6
    Meldable Perception: 1
Suggested Meld: Gatherer’s Guerdon IV (Gathering +6), Gatherer’s Guile I (Perception +3, capped to 1)

    - HQ Feet: Has Gathering +3, Perception +32
    Meldable Gathering: 1
    Meldable Perception: 6
Suggested Meld: Gatherer’s Guile IV (Perception +6), Gatherer’s Guerdon I (Gathering +3, capped to 1)

    - HQ Dodore Survival Belt: Has Perception +16
    Meldable Gathering: 4
    Meldable Perception: 3
Suggested Meld: Gatherer’s Guerdon II (Gathering +4), OVERMELD Gatherer’s Guile I (Perception +3)

    - HQ Rose Gold Ear Screws OR HQ Rose Gold Ear Cuffs OR HQ Rose Gold Earrings: Has no stats
    Meldable Gathering: 5
    Meldable Perception: 5
Suggested Meld: Gatherer's Guerdon III (Gathering +5), OVERMELD Gatherer's Guile III (Perception +5)

    - HQ Gryphonskin Choker OR HQ Rose Gold Gorget OR HQ Astral Choker: Has no stats
    Meldable Gathering: 5
    Meldable Perception: 5
Suggested Meld: Gatherer's Guerdon III (Gathering +5), OVERMELD Gatherer's Guile III (Perception +5)

    - HQ Gryphonskin Wristbands OR HQ Rose Gold Bracelets OR HQ Astral Bracelets: Has no stats
    Meldable Gathering: 5
    Meldable Perception: 5
Suggested Meld: Gatherer's Guerdon III (Gathering +5), OVERMELD Gatherer's Guile III (Perception +5)

    - HQ Gryphonskin Ring OR HQ Rose Gold Ring OR HQ Astral Ring: Has no stats
    Meldable Gathering: 5
    Meldable Perception: 5
Suggested Meld: Gatherer's Guerdon III (Gathering +5), OVERMELD Gatherer's Guile III (Perception +5)
NOTE: You will need two of these, since you can equip two rings.

LASTLY: There is also a HQ headpiece that you can meld. However, if you choose you can skip this and instead try to obtain the Forager's Hat. You get this hat by trading in 10 HQ Silver Sovereigns. Silver Sovereigns are a hard-to-catch fish at Oschon's Torch in Lower La Noscea. The Forager's Hat is slightly better than a fully-melded HQ headpiece.

Note that you will also need to catch 20 HQ Silver Sovereigns in order to obtain your Forager's Rod, the next fishing rod up from your Halcyon Rod. After catching 20 HQ Silver Sovereigns, you may never want to fish at Oschon's Torch ever again. You may even want to never again come to Lower La Noscea. Or fish at all. Or start the game.

So, if you choose to never get the Forager's Hat, it is understandable. Here's how you can meld your HQ hat, if you prefer to do it that way:

    - HQ Head: Has Perception +64
    Meldable Gathering: 4
    Meldable Perception: 11
Suggested Meld: Gatherer’s Guile IV (Perception +6), Gatherer’s Guile III (Perception +5), OVERMELD Gatherer’s Guerdon II (Gathering +4)

Edit: Wrote "Artisan's Rod" instead of "Forager's Rod". Corrected.

This is exactly what I've been looking for: a concise, step by step break down of how to meld for fisher. Heck, it's basically the only reason I created a forums account. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
