Some glasses don't even have arms that go around the head at all. For instance, there's monocles and glasses that just cling to the nose. I think it comes down to proper weight balancing and size and structural shape for your face/head so that it can get traction wherever it is. If the item isn't very heavy, it doesn't need such a solid grip to maintain its position. A slight squeeze in the right place is enough for it to hold itself up. I believe that is the concept behind monocles and nose-sitters so can't see why it can't work for things that have the added benefit of arms to lightly grip the head itself with, regardless of ear placement.
