I know it's been said, 40 hours, but I feel like I've passed that checkpoint. I've got BLM at 50, which took me forever, and BOT at 20, which also took a good chunk of time, and I've also got a couple other classes in the works, not to mention I RP quite a lot.
Is there some way to check how many hours I have, so I know?
It used to be 40 hours, but they changed it. Now, if you haven't gone to Ishgard, then you'll keep the "New Player" status (or at least the ability to set it) indefinitely, no matter how long you've played. It can also continue after reaching Ishgard if you have under I believe the new value was 168 hours.
In other words, it's now pretty much meaningless. I've been playing since ARR launch, have 2 jobs and all 11 DoH/DoL classes to 50, and I could still set my status to "New Adventurer" if I wanted to, just because I'm not using the expansion yet.

I played 66 hours and I still have it
but i kinda like it xD
just to be clear you can change the status to whatever via the edit search info menue but it will reset to new adventurer at your next log in ( in other words that change is not perminate ) ..... as for the sproute thing the game is entering yet another dlc phase and there are alot of new characters and people starting the game it is understandable to want to help but ask before tryng to shove information in a new players face its offencive and offencive to soneone who isnt new just starting a new character . Also please remember people the game is built on options so thier are literaly tons of ways to play no one better then the next respect peoples choices and make a friend rather then argue 20 mins in a run .
the newbie sign.
will be gone when you get a enough playtime and achievements.
playtime alone is not enough when you dont progress in storyline.

the Sprout stays until you manually turn it off or you clock 168 hours of gameplay and completion of the A Realm Reborn Main story line upto Patch 2.55 (Before The Fall)
oh my god we need more people like you!
Honestly I'd keep mine for as long as humanely possible. I feel less shy about making mistakes or asking for help/boss strats because most of the time they see sprout and explain it anyway. I'd be stupid to want to get rid of it when people ride past me and /tell me tips for the area I'm in.

The only thing keeping my sprout tag is being behind on the MSQ since I'm staying in sync with a friend on that and she doesn't play as much as me. I'll be sad when I lose my sprout symbol. I'll still have so many dungeons left to visit and mechanics to learn, but no cute little symbol to show the other players that I'm new to it all.
