OP Updated with a few rough examples.

Perhaps too complicated, but was fun anyway .

Polymock sounds neat, though I'm trying to keep us from straight copying any other games' Minion Battle system.

WoW thieved Pokemon, people may argue this idea is similar, however you have to remember this style of combat is distinctly rooted in the Final Fantasy franchise.

Party-based ATB Combat IS Final Fantasy. Sure, using Minions as combatants isn't something new... but we have them, we may as well have some fun battling 'em!

Besides, this format is entirely different than Pokemon's.

GE: Are there any future plans for minions? In WoW, for example, there was a battle-type system. Any plans for anything like that?

Yoshida: We have so many minions planned. For us, we don’t want this to have too big of a footprint in the game, because some will be from events and different things and if they were really useful in the game and some people that don’t have them will be at a disadvantage. We don’t want to create that unfairness, we want it to be more of a fun thing. We saw how they did the fighting pets in WoW, and I thought it was really just Pokemon. But, we are looking at having the companions, like the Chocobo or Magitek armor, battle. Would you rather have two airships or two fingers fighting? We think that’s what the players want – to see Chocobos and Magitek fighting – so we will put our efforts there.

Eh I think Minions would be a lot more fun.

All larger Companions fighting would turn into is probably a 1v1 Rock-Paper-Scissors style system of fighting.

You can invent a turn-based combat system that isn't Pokémon with ease.

I feel he's wrong about this... the party-based ATB combat is a FF staple, in no way possible could Companion Mounts support such a feature.

They're far too large, I don't think it would feel nearly epic enough as he envisions it... the field-of-view couldn't handle it & animations for Companions would require a lot more effort to facilitate this.

I also think the cuteness/variety of Minions far outshines that of Companion Mounts, I feel there'd be a ton more interest for Minion Combat.

I think plenty of the Minions are way more nostalgic too, especially given how they kind of remind you of past FF 32-Bit styles, etc.

    What do you all think?

    This' awesome.

I wholeheartedly agree that Minion Battle would be a lot more exciting, fun, & more FF-like than Companion Combat.

Companion Combat would probably turn into a dull arcade fighter without much depth, it couldn't nearly have the breadth or depth of a Minion Battle System.

I'm glad to see there are other players who would like some form of Minion mini-game. There were a number of ideas that I wanted to post about a month or so ago, but forgot to write down, and I've forgotten most of them. Generally, my thoughts were similar to what's been posted, including the simplified FF Tactics combat.

Each player fields 4 minions from among those they own, placed on a 6x6 board. Minions have HP, SP, and movement stats and an elemental affinity, a basic attack and a special ability which can be a skill, spell or trait. Cooldowns for abilities are measured in player turns. Moving costs 1 SP per space and is limited by the movement stat. Basic attacks cost 1 SP, mostly hit only adjacent spaces and have no cooldown. Skills cost 1 or more SP, are generally short range and have a short cooldown. Spells cost 2 or more SP, are either instant cast with a long cooldown or have an upfront cast time, can hit from long range and take advantage of elemental affinity. Traits cost nothing and give a unique effect. Defending against attacks is possible if the minion has leftover SP after acting. SP for a player's minions is reset at the beginning of that player's next turn.

Minions with multiple forms (e.g. Wind-Up Leader, Minion of Light) can only use one of those forms per match, but each form has its own stats and ability. Minions that are functionally identical (e.g. GC mammets, GC chocobo hatchlings) have the same stats and abilities. All minions should have a fair balance of stats and ability regardless of rarity or exclusivity.

I had some other stuff, like a list of abilities that minions might have, but I'll have to remember what they were and post it later.

Implementing CD's into a Tactical turn-based environment is interesting.

A skirmish style board would be cool too.

I think it would be unfair to people who missed out on limited/exclusive minions.

Eh, so long as they keep it tightly-balanced & don't make exclusive minions especially niche or OP... I don't think it should be a problem.

    You get what you earned.

If SE were worried about it, the worst they could do is disallow exclusive minion participation.

I for one welcome a fight against the illusive Wind-Up Bahamut however.
