It doesn't have to be that bad. People just make bad investments and make Novus much more harder for themselves.
Take BLM for example. The best Novus in terms of boosting your DPS (factoring in all other available gear) is 44 spell speed and 31 DET. That's going to be pretty expensive (estimated 3M+ gil to complete).
As an alternative - do 25 Crit, 25 DET and 25 spell speed and you get a weapon that is only 2 DPS less than the above. This will cost an estimated 300k to complete.
Zodiac weapons have yet to be BIS (from what we have seen - the coil rewards have always been better). Why spend 2.7M gil for 2 DPS? We are talking about 2 DPS when there are screens out there of BLMs pulling off 400+ DPS with procs in coil turn 8. So congratulations - every 3 and a half minutes you gained an extra second worth of dmg if you paid for the expensive novus.
Nobody knows what future zodiac weapons will look like. The allocations could be reset again or completely thrown for a loop during the next update. How long will Zodiac weapons last? Will the expansion bring new Zodiac weapons that completely invalidate the ones we currently have?
Bottom line - they aren't as good as coil rewards so why kill yourself to farm 2.7M+ of additional gil? If you have it already - go ahead and buy it. But it's definitely not worth spending the time and effort farming for it.
Arn't these items a waste though? According to this thread. Spiritbond +1 adds only 1% of a quicker progress whereas an item that is HQ adds 20-25% add an additional meld for another 20-25%. So equipping all this extra jewelry you listed would be great if you didn't use any jewelry at all, not to mention the use of these items means you will be losing out on 5 other items to spiritbond. But if you want to really make things quicker just use HQ items with a meld.
How much does a Novus cost? Well, exactly 5,034,250g!
My Gae Bolg Novus cost me this much doing 44 Critical hit and 31 Determination. I kept track because I'm sad, or have OCD, or something. I bought every materia except the Tier 1s as they can be spiritbonded in an hour. Here is a breakdown of each tier and how much it cost me based on Sargatanas's prices at the time. They have since increased dramatically (not sure why!) and I'm fortunate to have finished my Novus when I did. I'd be looking at it being about 30% more expensive now.

My conclusion? Worth every penny!
Edit:
Obviously overlooked mentioning this is only counting the successful infusions. The final Novus cost me 6,325,500g when it factors in blown up materia... It's hard to 'pinpoint' the cumulative cost of a Novus since the cost will fluctuate wildly depending on how lucky you get with your Tier 4 infusions. Thankfully I succeeded every Tier 4 first try bar one.

Yup - and then you can use the 3 hours potions that gives a SB bonus, and from your FC the action for spiritbonding.Arn't these items a waste though? According to this thread. Cost isn't just measured in gil. It is true that spiritbinding all of your own materia will save gil, but the underlying factor of RNG means that there will be a significant cost of time. Ideally, the situation in which you sell unwanted Materia for gil to offset bad RNG by buying materia you weren't lucky enough to obtain is the best way to go after a Novus. It's a balance of time and gil when one calculates the cost. It's also worth noting that you have until you possess 75 Alexandrite to actually have all of your Materia ready, and there are compelling arguments as to the massive reduction in costs that avoiding Grade IV Materia can provide.
You are lucky...
I'm reached the Tier IV... and i'm crying for my Omnilex novus.
If I get 44 Crit and 31 Det I'll spend only for tier IV just 9,5M gils... of course if all enter at first time....
SE please introduce a way to get materia buying with a value.. like allied seals or company seals.. you can't give a materia the price of a 450k... WTH how can I manage to get 9,5M?? i'm trying to SB jewelry but getting only Fire, Wind, Ice Materia IV.. and other III (sold for 10k .___. )
I can't buy a lot of SB item so how much i'll take for get my novus? 2 years? -.-
PS. and please remove the useless elemental materia and primary stat >.>
Momo Ochita From Ragnarok
Amen to that... or is it blasphemous to use the word Amen, when one has lost his soul...? Whatever.
Anyway, I bought the majority of my materia the day that the quest was released, before prices inflated hugely, and I still spent about 3 Mil total for my Det/Crit bow, mostly due to meld fails on tier IIIs/IVs.
