Honestly I don't think this particular issue is exclusive to the "Keyboard v Controller" issue as I have the same issue as DoctorMog and I use a controller. There are too many actions involved to initiate auto attack despite all of the contextual requirements already being fulfilled. This goes for a lot of other UI choices made for XIV such as:

    - The log in process
    - Summoning a retainer
    - The retainer option in the main menu having no purpose but to show what retainers you have
    - Equipping gear
    - Equipping actions (which I think they're working on if I remember correctly)
    - Aetheryte and Aetherial node activation
    - Some doors needing to be activated while others open automatically (Nanawa Mines)
    - Not having the same auto select for non leve crafting as they do for leve crafting (I could see arguments against it)

... and others but they currently escape me.

    EDIT:

If they ever get around to setting any button (including shift+, ctrl+, alt+ buttons) for the eaction slots 1-30 (instead of just 0-9), I'll be in heaven. That and allowing offensive spells to just start casting after a single press instead of being required to confirm the target.
I only use controller for gathering and crafting.

I use my ps3 controller... FTW. I don't get annoyed scrolling left and right and up and down. Only problem I have is camera angles when I'm targeting something and I want to heal someone behind me. But still, I don't have to enter to auto-attack, I just do it.

i dont understand why they dont just do away with this active/passive stuff and make it the attack button, or at least make it auto attack the mob you have targeted in active mode

^This! Right here! In WoW, you approach a monster and right-click with your mouse to start attacking. It's one simple motion.

But in FFXIV, active/passive mode and the act of actually engaging an enemy still feel like two different things. With the implementation of auto-attack, they really need to tighten this up so it doesn't feel like separate actions. It needs to be one fluid motion, no matter how it's approached.

I really think an 'attack' or 'auto-attack' button on the #1 slot on the action bar would help. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe in WoW it flashes when you're using it. It's pretty obvious in that game if you're attacking or not, but in FFXIV, it still isn't. I really think a graphical indicator like this would help.

Oh, and I loved Aion's auto-approach! It was the first game I played that had this feature, so it took a bit of getting used to. You could turn it off, but when I did, I found I had gotten so used to it, I wanted to keep it on! I doubt we'll see this in FFXIV, but it was a nifty feature.

What? Menu-driven nonsense? Talk about taking a step backwards.

No thanks. Give me action bars!

I assumed they were trying to REDUCE the number of actions we had to take to do things.

    Guess not...

Can we PLEASE just get an action at level 1 called "Auto attack on/off"

This whole "not sure if my character is attacking or not" thing is BS
i was annoyed by it myself.. guess what I left a spot blank when I locked on and just hit that button. 5 usually has nothing, but with controller I hit an open space the move to next move lock in and start attacking, and yes it is a headache. It is clunky battle system, stay with it until it is revised and I doubt it will be in 1.18a-c...

The only problem is that the PC controllers on the market suck. Badly! There's only one model that fits in my hands, isn't so flimsy that it breaks in a couple of months, and has 11 programmable buttons... and it's been discontinued for years. I'm tempted to stockpile a few of the remaining ones available through Amazon.com just in case my existing one breaks. (And, admittedly, the latest one I bought--after 4 years on the first one--is a little flaky with the direction pad, so I should replace it.)

While were at it. someone mentioned button flash to let you know AA.

why not have button flash for skill proc. only one im aware of so far is pug evasion.

i really like the new gold arrow above mobs head when selected. why not have gold or some other color ring around the bottom of selected targets to let you know AA is engaged.

im not saying do it like this. just an idea http://www.whyyoumadbro.com/?category_name=rift

    thanks

I don't enjoy the use of a gamepad at all, this is a legit concern when buying a PC game. If I wanted to play with a controller I'd of waited and got the PS3 version when it comes out. I didn't play XI on xbox for the same reason.

There needs to be a normal 'start auto attack' binding or button. Being a mouse and keyboard player, having to either double click, press enter, or use a attack skill to start AA is annoying.
