mouse + keyboard should have advantage over a controller. We're not playing a platformer here, clearly there's still an issue.

man i have been waiting on them to improve the kb mapping forever....i want to map my arrow keys damnit!
Um... Doesn't anyone here realize you still have to push the same amount of buttons on the controller as you do on a keyboard??
For me, it's left trigger to pull out weapon, left or right on d-pad 1 to 10(or more) times depending on where the mob stands among other targets, A to commence auto-attack, and right trigger to lock on.
In no way is that any better than the keyboard.
SE has been making great strides with the game, but there are still obvious flaws and this is one of them. People need to stop making excuses for them.
huh?? i just jump straight in without pulling out my weapon, select target > enter(lock on) and there you have it! auto attack initiated.
I totally agree. Not only this problem for me but now when im engaged i have a problem as where i cant press up/down to switch action bars sometimes i have to unlock on target put weapon away and reengage to to get my action bar to switch w/o manually clicking the arrow . I constantly find myself using a ability to enter auto attack i should just be able to walk up to it mouse click it and automatically start attacking like in ff11. How come everything that was so easy in 11 has to be some damn hard, underutilized and absurd in ff14. THIS IS A PC GAME . CONTROLLERS ARE FOR CONSOLES AND NOT A GOOD TOOL FOR PC MMOS . HTF do u controller players swtich between skills? scroll thru them and waste time?I USED to be able to walk up to a monster, and press 1 (light attack)
NOW I have to walk up, press "F" to pull out my weapon, "C" to lock on, then ENTER to start auto attacking.
I assumed they were trying to REDUCE the number of actions we had to take to do things.
Guess not...
Can we PLEASE just get an action at level 1 called "Auto attack on/off"
This whole "not sure if my character is attacking or not" thing is BS
Actually, for me... hitting my attacks even when the cooldown for them isn't up yet will still initiate my auto attack. I have my basic attack set to the 1 key and if for whatever reason the game decides not to begin auto-attacking, I just press 1 then it starts.
Also, I do support the idea of a command or ability that stops the auto-attack... especially given that there are some enemies with counters. Yes, turning can work but sometimes I hit a WS just before the counter-type-phase deal and my auto attack comes right after... wouldn't normally have been an issue in this game.
yet needa icon to indicate if auto atk is working or not.I USED to be able to walk up to a monster, and press 1 (light attack)

Id be a happy camper if they just added a icon to the #1 slot for all jobs for auto attack. Should solve some issues some of us are having at least.....
edit.
I checked the JP forums and there is 2 threads of people complaing of same issue and asking for a Icon on action bar to swtich on auto attack as many of us want on this thread.
I've been targeting the mob and pressing a basic attack to enter combat. It works, but there is definitely a bit of a delay that makes me wonder momentarily if I'm going to attack. Only the mobs name/bar turning red, and the mob going into its aggressive/defensive animation really lets me know I'm actually fighting.
I have no doubt this is one of the things Yoshi refers to when he mentions making on-going adjustments and tweaks to the combat system. It does definitely feel "weird" at the moment.
Perhaps just putting Ctrl+A in like in XI, or being able to assign some other hot key would be a good way to sorta do everything at once when you have a mob targeted.
Could go something like this:
1 - Select Mob
2 - Press Ctrl+A (or other hotkey)
3 - Character automatically goes into active mode and beings auto-attacking, with very low delay before first attack (for the sake of response/feedback time).
4 - When mob is dead you can either go into passive, or switch targets, just as it is now.
Seems straight-forward enough to me.
Obviously it would be different for a gamepad, but hopefully just as straight-forward.
I would suggest a button for the action bar, but that would eat up one slot that could be better used for something else.

On the back of the box, it says a gamepad is recommended. I think most people that had complaints about the controls (like the recent mmorpg.com review) never bothered to try it with a gamepad. I usually play on a PS3 control, which I find easier to use than M/KB. Sometimes when it comes unplugged I have to use the KB, I don't mind it, but I'm terrible with the camera controls being mapped to IJKL.
