Skipping through most of this thread because it seems to have developed into an off-topic discussion about using keyboards or gamepads.

I agree with the OP, and I also mentioned something similar in another post as my number one thing that needs to be changed to make the battle system more user friendly:

I know we have other basic skills we can use for this, but I'd much prefer one with the cooldown of the weapon attack speed and no mp cost (see pugilists' former basic attacks). Y'know, like the archers light shot, but for melee. Please?
And yes, I use a gamepad. I have active mode on and have the mob targetted with my action bar up before I reach the mob. I run up to the mob and face it and auto-attack will start sometime. The number of actions required to do a basic attack isn't really the issue for me as it's actually less actions with the auto-attack. The problem is that the lack of a button to initiate auto-attack means you have to stand in more place more often in battle or risk losing dps due to time spent realigning yourself and wondering if your auto-attack is going to start (for example. No longer can I run circles around yarzons when fighting them to avoid their frontal attacks as now I'll just run around and never actually attack it.).

But seriously, there's no reason why we shouldn't be able to have the auto-attack skill available for display on our skill bar. Even if people don't want to use it to click they'd still be able to see the cooldown time between auto-attacks.

If anyone doesn't understand what I mean, picture archers Light Shot as it is, but being automatically spammed for you when in the right position for auto-attack without having to click it, but also having the option to click it if you really want to to force your character into the position for auto-attack.
