^This! Right here! In WoW, you approach a monster and right-click with your mouse to start attacking. It's one simple motion.
But in FFXIV, active/passive mode and the act of actually engaging an enemy still feel like two different things. With the implementation of auto-attack, they really need to tighten this up so it doesn't feel like separate actions. It needs to be one fluid motion, no matter how it's approached.
I really think an 'attack' or 'auto-attack' button on the #1 slot on the action bar would help. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe in WoW it flashes when you're using it. It's pretty obvious in that game if you're attacking or not, but in FFXIV, it still isn't. I really think a graphical indicator like this would help.
Oh, and I loved Aion's auto-approach! It was the first game I played that had this feature, so it took a bit of getting used to. You could turn it off, but when I did, I found I had gotten so used to it, I wanted to keep it on! I doubt we'll see this in FFXIV, but it was a nifty feature.
What? Menu-driven nonsense? Talk about taking a step backwards.
No thanks. Give me action bars!
