Is it good/bad/indifferent idea to equip a THM with a shield?

so long as you keep both the one handed wep and the shield up to date (and no staffs currently are of higher lvl that you could use) its pretty much the same exact stats as a equal lvl staff, sept you can block for what that's worth as a DPS :P

If you are using a 1-handed weapon you do want to have a shield. 1-handed weapons have slightly lower stats than 2-handed weapons because they take into account the stat bonuses a shield would give you along with some added survivability.

However keep in mind that the most important stat on weapons is the Damage / Magic Damage rating so don't be afraid to use a 1-handed weapon if you can't find a suitable shield as long as it has more Magic Damage than your previous weapon.
