New to FFXIV. Have some questions.

So I am a transfer from FFXI and I am having a hard time getting used to this game. I see some things that are similar but don't understand a lot. Can Someone highlight the main differences between the 2 and give me some advice as to what to focus on starting out? I was a lvl99 MNK on FFXI and I am trying MNK again here.

Also, I am not really sure what the whole fate thing is about besides good XP.

Any advice would be a great help.

    Thanks!

Even though I haven't reached it myself, the highest level of any skill in this game is 50

I have not played FFXI so cannot say for sure. The level is 50 in this game but it works with ilv after you reach level 50.
As an example there is level 60, 80, 90, 100 and 110 gear and so on. My blm is ilv 96 and Bard is 94 atm, white mage if i recall is level 72.
Fates used to be a great source of leveling up classes while getting exp, grand company seals and such but you will now see end game players (level 50 and such) do lower level fates as well as it is part of end game weapon quests.
Sadly it can be frustrating to new players as the higher level people flock like swarms to fates and you may not get any hits in on enemies.
Monk is one of the best Single Target damage class in this game, still people debate between Monk and Dragoon.
All depends on what you prefer to do. Monks are not always needed in groups but are good to have, Bards on the other hand as it is a support type of class are always needed, especially end game content

once you reach lv 50, its item level that matters, which goes above 100. i main as a white mage, with a level 50 monk, and im building up my black mage which is at 39. the best thing about ff14, iss that you can have every class on a single charachter. i have one level 50 crafting and a lv 38 botanist for gathering. with overly abundant end-game content its not about getting to 50, because thats when the real fun starts.

Probably the biggest difference between this game and FF11 is that the game does try very hard to provide you with the information you need to play it. Almost everything is unlocked by following the main story quest which unlike FF11 is designed to take you from level 1 to the level cap. Each new feature you unlock is usually accompanied by an entry in the Active help so you can read up on it.

It is important to stay on top of your class quests which not only unlock features such as being able to change classes and saving gear sets, they also unlock very important skills.

If there is something you are unsure about in-game usually taking a moment to mouse over the thing in question (like a skill or one of the stats in the character sheet) will give you the relevant information. The Active Help menu can be accessed from the System menu too so you can review any topics you may have skipped or forgot.

FATEs are simply just public events that pop up from time to time that offer you another means of getting XP that you can freely join or ignore while doing quests and such. The best thing I can compare them to in FF11 is campaign battles.

Thank you for your replies. If I am understanding correctly, you cap at 50 and your gear is what further "lvls" you. Is this correct?

Estellios, can you compare the MNK in 11 aand 14 for me? Are job roles basically the same?

Well, both areDPS that punch things. The similarities kinda end there.

Correct, once you reach the level cap you improve your character by collecting gear with higher item levels as opposed to gaining experience.

I didn't play too much of MNK in 11 so I can't really comment on it, but MNK in 14 revolves around doing heavy, constant damage quickly by maintaining combos and keeping self-buffs and enemy debuffs/DoTs active. It's quite active and you have to move around a lot to optimize your damage. Your main mechanic is Greased Lightning which you get from completing a 3-step combo (I'm sure you have access to this at your level). As you level up you can get more stacks of Greased Lightning by maintaining a combo which increases your attack and attack/skill speed even further.

Your other major mechanic is the 3 stances, with some skills only getting specific effects when in a certain step of your combo and others being outright unusable unless you are in the correct stance. As an example, Arm of the Destroyer is a skill that can Silence an enemy but only if you are in a specific stance. There is a boss in the Binding Coil of Bahamut that has an annoying skill that must be Silenced to interrupt it and it follows a set pattern. A MNK can keep that skill locked down indefinitely by paying attention to the pattern and timing their combo so that they will be on the correct stance whenever that skill is cast.

So aside from what was mentioned, stances ,combos and positioning. Their is no MND build for chi blast , no bones party's (no xp parties in general- where all closet beast masters). And sadly no hundred fists.
