BLM concerns (End Game)

Alright, I know there are many threads here about DPS comparisons, so please excuse me for making a new thread as I was on the ropes on weather I should or not. That out of the way, I have a few concerns regarding my main Job, BLM.

It seems that many are conflicted on which dps class is the "best" for damage output, so I just want to say ahead of time, I by NO MEANS consider my Job as BLM to be any better than, say monk or ANY other dps for that matter.

I LOVE BLM I have always played this sort of class and it pains me to read about how BLM's DPS doesn't quite stack up well with some of the other classes.

I really don't know how true all that is and I do have my own personal outlook regarding all that.

My concern though (Finally XD) is will I have trouble getting in to parties for later turns in Coil as a BLM? (taking into account gearing up)

You're probably reading about BLM before the most recent patch, 2.3. Their damage got buffed almost exactly 10% in 2.3, which put them in a very competitive spot and are in no way a sub-par choice to a team if you can play well.

I don't know if we're equal to SMN yet as far as overall DPS, especially in movement-heavy fights (but really, we shouldn't be equal to them in movement-heavy fights, that's their strong point while ours is our burst).

However, this buff not only increased our dps, but all increased our burst capability, so we're now even better at the thing we've always been able to do better than smn. Before, being better burst didn't mean as much because of how much lower our overall DPS was. Now that the gap in overall DPS is smaller and we're -even better- at burst, that makes the strength/weakness aspect more significant. I know at least some people for Second Coil will use BLM for certain turns and switch to smn for other turns, depending on which brings more appropriate tools for that fight. So far, I haven't done any turns where I felt the need to go SMN instead of BLM, myself, but I have that option open. Also, my static runs one SMN and one BLM as our primary make-up, though we both have the ability to switch to the other if we decide we would rather have two blm or two smn for a particular fight.

In a standstill, in equal gear, BLM > SMN slightly but it's close. In actual content it depends on if there's AoE, multi-DoTing, how long multi-DoTs can last, how mobile the content is, how bad RNG can take you out of the fight, etc, but it's usually pretty close or SMN will win unless it's something like T8.

SMN was not buffed by 5%. In most practical fights they weren't even buffed in the slightest - the biggest change is Bio II's MP cost reduction, which is very minor and more a QoL change than a buff.

No, actually, it wasn't.

The only dps related buff to SMN was on Ifrit, and at least one of the moves (I forget what the other one is) is a move you'll rarely have him do because you want to keep your egi on obey unless it's titan-egi, because it's better dps (especially on Garuda-Egi) and keeps Ifrit-Egi from using his stun. Even with the buff to Ifrit, it's still better dps for the SMN to use Garuda-Egi, thus no actual change to SMN's current dps.

comparing blm to smn now isnt as close as people seem to think it is, if both are highly skilled, the smn will win by a landslide on most fights, the only exception i can think of is T8, in which blm is now fighting monks for top dps if neither have responsibilities (of course a smn wont be far behind), and of course AOE intensive fights, which basically dont exist in second coil.

While BLM may not top the charts in single boss Damage over the whole fight, it has defensive buffs, amazing AOE and great burst damage. All of which has it's own utility uses. With the single target increase BLM is a great endgame class

Black mage is in a really good position right now and can handle any fight with enough practice. If you like the job then go for it, its fun and can be rewarding to learn.
