    It's the same chocobo. After you get your bird from the main scenario, you do a quest that allows your bird to fight alongside you in the field.

    You can unlock the chocobo companion by completing the Lv.30 quest, My Fiesty Little Chocobo, by the Bentbranch Aetheryte. You must have your chocobo already for this quest.

    You also have to buy "gysahl greens", purchased from the female npc you interact with during the quest.

    Ok, I'm not far off (currently Lv28). I'm just taking a break from the main story quest and concentrating on leveling up the other classes my character has.
