I've been spending this entire time from when I first played trying to figure out who on earth you were supposed to look like in that stance. I suppose not actually seeing her fight in 1.0 made it less easy to tell.

At the point in the story where your character does that, Merlwyb hadn't been introduced yet. The stance you're emulating was what you saw when you were on the boat in the opening cutscene and Sthalmann was fighting off the nasty little beasties that attacked.
