GPU upgrades would cost more than $100, the whole reason why they can afford to sell HW at the prices they do is because on-board gpu/cpu chips are cheaper than a module. But it's not that nintendo/sony/ms can't make a upgradable unit, its that they wont because upgradable units mean different specs and less cash flow. The cash flow part comes from licensing rights to the new systems, 1st party accessories like controllers, and other media facets partnering with the developer(think hulu/netflix/ect). Hell some developers(nintendo) even make money off the hw itself.
The real question is why Ford won't make a car that isn't found on the side of the road dead, requiring the driver to return on foot.
