The only rogue I know has a southern accent but seriously more lore is attached to thieves than rogues. So not really seeing how a rogue is some what more famous.

I don't think it has to do with fame. I believe they are trying to avoid having jobs as base classes, but if Naoki had his way then Rogue right now would be named Thief and would become Ninja job. Thief's physically prowess is what lends itself to Rogue, so in a sense untrained Thief could be appropriate if you're talking solely about stealing skills. But in terms of battle power, Thief is like L1 Rogue.

Specially when Yoshida said himself in this very interview "We have to think of the people who are new to the series as well", Rogues aren't exactly the same as thieves, least in FF terms. Rogues tend to be what transitioned into 'Assassin' type classes in generic MMOs and very rarely did Rogues even have the ability to 'steal/mug' or anything else a thief could do (like in XI mechanics, control enmity, boost their skill damage dramatically and so on) - You can argue they're the same, but they have subtle differences since each MMO usually treated them differently and in terms of the series ARR is apart of, it never really had the 'rogue' type of class.

Besides, you can just name your character something like 'IMA Thief'.
