The possible ways to catch are Goby --> Gigantshark, Harbor Herring --> Gigantshark or Herring --> Ogre Barracuda --> Gigantshark. Personally, I've found minnows to give better results, plus you don't have to deal with restocking bait or carrying around stacks of them. If you use the statistics on ff14angler - which you have to take with a grain of salt since there's no indication of what % of attempts was in what weather, but still, the sample size is large enough to dampen some of the effects - then lugworm and minnow have roughly the same total % on gigantsharks.

First of all, the easy way to tell what your chances are of a successful desynth without going into the screen is to look at the crafting level compared to your skill. At sufficiently high recipe levels (41+), check the following chart (I posted the exact formula somewhere on this thread):

Recipe Level compared to Skill (recipe levels 41+)
    30 above: 0% success
    20 above: 15% success
    10 above: 30% success
    equal: 50% success
    10 below: 70% success
    20 below: 85% success
    30 below: 100% success
[all are +5% per materia melded]

This means your success rate will be 70% at skill 100 for r90 items, but 100% at 100 for r70 items. Your skill appears to be 82-83 (35% isn't actually possible). Carpenter is really annoying to level because there's no r90 items to socket. However, at least on my server, petrified logs are still really cheap compared to Fieldcraft Demis, so spamming nothing but Straight Stepping Stumps should be really effective for leveling. Sure, it takes a lot of successes to go up a level, but you should be making more than you're spending, unless RNGesus hates you. I'd stick with it until you're getting only ~0.02 skill per success, which should be around dSkill 89-90 At dSkill 88, I was still getting 0.08 per, which is really not bad (~12 for a level). As a note, if you succeed in desynthing an r90 item at dSkill 83, you'll get ~0.60 skill from it. That value will quickly drop to more like 0.40-0.50 though around dSkill 85. It's hard to get good numbers for the exp values when just two successes pushes you out of the skill level :P

From the data I analyzed on ff14angler, minnows are the best path, but you're right that it's really not by very much. Your chance of catching a Herring with a Minnow is greater than the chance of catching a Merlthor with a Lugworm, but your chance of catching a Shark straight is less with a Herring than a Merlthor. However, Merlthor Gobys do not mooch to Ogre Barracudas, only Harbor Herrings can catch Ogre Barracudas. This makes eventually mooching to a shark a little more likely with the Minnow. Here's the data, if you want to look at it. Here's the math (assuming 20% HQ rate and ignoring the impact of weather on the data), if you care:

    ((0.50*0.2)*0.194) = 1.94% shark chance per cast
    ((0.628*0.2)*0.139+(0.628*0.2)*(0.393*0.2)*0.442) = 2.18% shark chance per cast

As a note, if you use the tug strength trick to catch Herrings, it's the only fish that has a moderate tug strength that a Minnow can catch, so all the fish I pull up are Herrings anyway. No garbage fish if you're careful. The same doesn't hold true for Merlthors in this location, because of the shrimp. And, if you're using tug strength, you go through bait a lot slower with the Herrings since you're using a lure, which is a small but nice benefit.

The annoying location for me is Limsa Lower Decks, because Pillbugs are vastly superior to Lugworms due to the advantages of using Herrings (noticably greater Octomammoth catch rate, double the chance of getting a herring with a pillbug than a merlthor with a lugworm), but you catch so many useless Coral Butterflies (same tug strength as Herrings, and you get about one for every two Herrings).

Of course, whatever works for you works for you, but the math favors Herrings over Merlthors.

Thanks a lot, Nyalia. I could have sworn I read 35% for the Carbuncle chair but will have to look again. Seems I picked one of the best classes for Desynthesis LOL. Oh well, I am going to get my Goldsmith up anyways too after I am done with Carpenter. But you pointed something out I am glad for because I totally missed it although I flipped through the levelling list. Doh! I was trying to get my Fieldcraft Demimateria III with ilevel 90 crafts but I can already have them by crafting straight stepping stumps as it seems so maybe, I do not even need to bring my CRP up to 100%..will check this weekend.

Another question: How did you proceed with your 2nd DOH for Desynthesis? I know the 1st one I have levelled will go down in his Desynthesis level when I start the 2nd one. So my plan was to procude enough Fieldcraft Demimateria III with my carpenter so I can get all the iLevel 75 tools for DOH/DOL (by the end of 2015 as it looks now lol) and have a few on hold for other crafts and afterwards start levelling my second DOH. Makes sense? Or did you level them both at the same time?

This guide is so helpful, highly appreciated!

And I found out thats reliable too, even there isnt that much success like for the artisans, tho
got 2 fieldcraft III, so its a nice to have

The new rimless glasses will give FC3 demimats. They also make for a great alternative to DL accessories it seems.

Thanks for letting us know! That will change very quickly once more people realize this and buy out all of the materials for them...

About 10-15 thick rimmed glasses... just the one Fieldcraft III (and one clear III). Not sure if RNG, but I get much better results from Artisan Specs.
