I am lth, wvr and gsm desynth. When I am doing rotations for FC1's I use gsm and go that route because all my items are free (miner). I don't like lth when doing it cause I would have to farm hippo for an hour (no thanks) and wvr cause of threads etc. I guess it would be the same if you were to farm hippo/mine electrum but hippo is RNG vs mining. Both are mind numbing tbh. It basically comes down to what you can afford and how much time investment you want to throw in.
While i47 items appear to have an FC1 yield of ~3-4x that of i20 items, i49 items cost about 6x as much, and that's just the shard cost. Factoring in the rest of the mats, it's more like 16x. I just started farming some FC1s for a friend's crafter accessories, and I started with 149 ragstone whetstones/brass ingots. By the time I ran out, I had 22 FC1s. 149+149*0.45+67*0.45+30*0.45+13.5*0.45+6*0.45=268 desynths for 22 FC1s. That cost me 268 fire shards, 268 wind shards, 149 bronze ingots, 149 ragstone whetstones. The shards were 68 gil each. So, I spent 536*68+149*68+149*7=47,623 gil for 22 FC1s, which puts them at 2,164 gil each.

If I had been working with i49 items which take 11 shards, electrum ingots (about 2k on my server?) and Basilisk Whetstones (let's say those are 1k, I forget), let's see how high the yield would have to be to break even with the Brass Rings of Crafting: Let Y be the Expected Yield of FC1s, S the shard cost to make one attempt, M the material cost for one attempt, F the final material cost after factoring in materials yielded, D be the initial number of desynths and T the total number after factoring in extra materials. For every synth, you get the non-shard materials to make (1-Y)/2 more desynths, giving you a geometric series for the total number of desynths: T=lim(n=0->inf) SUM(D*((1-Y)/2)^n). Since the geometric ratio is less than 1, that series converges into T=D*2/(1+Y). So, the relationship between F and M is F=M/(2/(1+Y)). D initial desynths yield T*Y demis (assuming you can't get more than 1 demi from each) and cost T*(S+F) gil. Or, you can see it as T*S+D*M (that's probably simpler). That gives you a price-per-materia of [D*(2/(1+Y))*S+D*M]/[D*(2/(1+Y))*Y]. The D's cancel giving: [(S*2/(1+Y)+M]/[Y*(2/(1+Y))] which is the same as [S+(M*(1+Y)/2)]/Y. So, plugging the numbers from before into that, M=75, S=136, Y=0.1, you get (136+75*1.1/2)*10 = 1,772, which is what the cost would have been if I obtained the average of 27 instead of 22. So, for the i47 stuff, assuming they yield only a single FC1 every time they yield FC1s, Y=0.33, S=748, M=3000, the price-per-demimateria would be (748+3000*1.33/2)/0.33 = 8312 gil.

But, that doesn't take into account the fact that you're not really getting 1 demi per 3 desynths, you're getting 1-2 demis every 0.22 desynths. So, the formula should really be: price-per-demimateria = [S+(M*(1+Y')/2)]/Y where Y' = Y*N/(N*(N+1)/2) and N=the maximum number of demis obtainable from a desynth. So, if N=2 and Y=0.33, Y'=0.22. So, a better answer would be (748+3000*1.22/2)/0.33 =7812 gil.

In conclusion, using the i47 Electrum Needle will cost 4.4 times as much per FC1 as using Brass Rings of Crafting. Of course, this is ignoring the increased time cost. But, given that FC1s sell on my server for 8k each last time I checked, you're only saving 188 gil by making them yourself via the needles. Using Brass Rings, you save 6,228 on average. Sure, using Brass Rings takes 3.3 times as long, but you save 33 times as much money. The Brass Rings of Crafting are literally ten times more cost efficient than the Electrum Needles if you take time into account.

Also, saying that something is cheaper if you gather the materials yourself is incorrect if you don't take into account how much gil you could have made selling (even shortselling) the materials instead of using them.
