Version: 3.0.6
(I'm a bit shaky on what to do after that point. Like, it seems as if Dragon Fang Earrings (r139) would be good given how little they take and they're practically the only item that requires Dragon Fangs, but those earrings are currently BiS for crafters. That will drive up the value of Dragon Fangs, unless retainers can be sent out for them. I'll have more info for you all when the endgame markets are a little more solidified.)
you CAN send retainers to get Dragon Fangs (battle class retainers)
Yeah, I should update that. Basically, if you aren't trying to make money at all, dragon fang earrings are the best way to level. Unlike other classes, it's hard to turn a profit or near profit with GSM at endgame. There are a few options though if mats are expensive, like some of the circlets. Weapons are never worth it though, and you can't buy accessories beyond the level 50 equipable stuff in Foundation. LTW, ARM, WVR, and even BSM have much cheaper options to level than GSM since they can sell the mats they get from vendor-bought items.
But yeah, Dragon Fang Earrings? Cheap as heck. I ground blue scrips off of them the other day (pre-patch) and got enough for four books and barely spent a dime (my retainer had over a hundred dragon fangs stashed from ventures awaiting this day, I bought/mined a few stacks of Hardsilver Sand, and then it was quicksynth 90 nuggets, macro-craft 90 collectable earrings while playing Borderlands: The Pre-sequel). I could have just as easily done that to get GSM to 170+ (I've been slacking).
That's a section of the guide I never went back to update. I'll do it soon, I promise! I blame the Airship Guide/Spreadsheet for taking me away from Desynth stuff xD

if you're willing to manmode it for Cul Desynth (or have friends who can fish with you), you can do Takitaro from 70-90 and farm up around 200~300 icepicks (for safety reasons against RNG), you can do 90-130~140 with icepicks alone with Tinker's Bacon. It's kind of depressing for the first 100 desynths, but after that, you should be hitting 30~50% and making substantial gains.
edit: changed to manmode cause that's less gross.
dubble edit: You can also do Blueclaw Shrimp once you're past the 105 threshold; they're usually cheap on the MB.
triple edit: it helps if i mention percentages, huh? With NQ Tinkerbacon, you're getting about 10~11.5% chance to desynth the Icepicks, hence why I recommend about 200~300 (i did 300 and it was enough to get me all the way to 140). In the span of ten minutes, assuming you have the focus, you can down about 100~150 synths. edit in edit: Sorry, my mind is fried after that marathon. You're getting between .60 and .90 points per desynth at that rate from 90+ to about 110~120, then it slows down to about .30~.50

Great advice, thank you!
I'm not a CUL Desynth, and my wife leveled super fast off the random fish I fished up with my FSH retainer while leveling her. Does anyone have any suggestions about what fish is particularly good for those who fish, rather than making their retainer do all the work, after the ~135 mark?

I think I did the following:
Hedgemole cricket/bubble eye/shipworm ~115's-130s? (I can't really remember well but I basically blew up any and all fish that got my hands on)
Mercy Staff/Snowcaller ~130-160ish?
Illuminati Perch/Hinterlands Perch/thunder eels from ~160-174 (Probably earlier than 160)
Storm Chasers from 174 to 180
Just finished a WVR Desynth leveling session using Rainbow Sashes and wanted to post my results:
Starting Desynth Skill: 91.52
Ending Desynth Skill: 106.19
Total Desynth Skill Increase: 14.67
Rainbow Sash Quantity: 61
Rainbow Sash Cost: 555,588 gil
Gil to Desynth Skill Rate: 40,559 gil per skill level
Desynth returns (Market Board estimate): 141,149 gil
Gil to Desynth Skill Rate (Desynth Returns Included): 30,937 gil per skill level
I bought all of the Rainbow Sashes from the vendor in Foundation. Added 1 materia to every Rainbow Sash, starting success rate was 14% without Tinker's Bacon, 26.50% with HQ Tinker's Calm and NQ Bacon Broth.
Skillups ranged from .50 to .81. Was successful on 23 of 61 attempts.
Materials Returned
Battlecraft Demimateria x19
Rainbow Cloth x15
Rainbow Thread x6
Wind Crystal x23
Lightning Crystal x23
just lvled culinary to 180, imo best fish from 165 - 180 is Storm chaser from Thral Oom Khash, I caught 100 of them with only 200 lures. Be sure to lower ur gathering to around 407- 412. I was getting big bites almost every time. From 170-180 it took 23 successful desyths to max.
Thanks for the advice, but why would lowering your gathering help?

Stumped on that too. It doesn't save time; you'll still attempt to reel in a high level fish and just get "you don't have the necessary skill" as a message instead of "fish gets away". No time saved. Might prevent you from losing your lure?
