I meant to get to this thread before, but this is actually plausible. There is an NPC north of Drybone just before the bridge that mentions the undead, like he's seen them before. I forget the exact words, but it makes a mention to the undead. There, you can start your quest for lore if you so choose.

Update: Tiny Aurochs, 21,21 says;

Listen! Can you hear them? The screams rising up from the bottom of the canyon! The Blades all tell me it's naught but the wind, but I've heard the wailing on nights where nary a leaf shuddered.
