The PSN has maintenance ever Tuesday in the US, not sure about other countries. If you play on PS3, sign up for PlayStation Plus. $60 USD for a year, and it gives you free games each month, but it also allows you to have Automatic Updates which you tell the system when to turn on automatically and install any updates for games. If you are on PS4 like myself, when launching the game if there is an update the PS4 will auto detect it, close the game download/update the launcher and then it will restart the game and the patch or whatever will auto download and install upon logging in. It's not complicated, it's not SE responsibility. It's YOURS as a gamer to understand when YOUR console needs updates when YOUR games need updates, and YOUR responsibility to understand when scheduled maintenance happens esp with the PSN being a weekly ordeal....it never changes. The only time the PSN goes "Down" is if it's being overloaded by people using it. No one is going to hold your hand and walk you through this. This is technical support forum not "let's complain because I don't understand what I'm doing" forum

Unfortunatelly - you're the one not understanding "how things works" ... The fact is that you can't login into ARR on PS3/4 while you're not logged into your PSN account e.g. if you've just came home and started PS3/4 while maintenance (or any unexpected issues) is in progress or game crashed or you needed to restart Playstation etc. If you've managed to login into PSN prior that you'll be fine. I actually don't switch of my PS4 because of that or even leave the game unles it forces me to re-login upon character change or crashes completely.

The problem is that even if you're aware of such workaround not everyone is comfortable with leaving PS3/4 running unattended and wasting electricity whole day while you out at work / school only so you can play at the evening when you'll get home during mainenance time. I don't mind as all my PS3s as well as PS4 currently were / are hapilly running almost 24/7 plus I also use remote play while trevelling to / from work to do some gathering and gardening so it's not as much issue for me unless the game crashes and then I simply play on my PC instead until I can login to PSN again. So I agree with OP that this is unnecessary annoyance and would be nice if that could be avoided however not knowing the exact details of the deal between Sony and SE it's hard to say who is to blame here - it could be as well Sony forcing this due their online game policies rather tha SE at which case SE can't do much about that.

    tl;dr:
Yes it's pain + we don't know if it's enforced by Sony so if you want to play during mainenace login prior it starts and have PS3/4 running.

It's not that hard to understand. I couldn't log in to PSN on my PS4, because of the Destiny overload. I was like well ok let's see if I can get on ARR, and sure enough I could. Maybe it's a PS4 thing, maybe I was just lucky. Either way, Sony has their rules about online games and PSN only games needing to be signed in into PSN in order to play. SE just creates the game and is the subscription host. It's an issue with Sony and their rules and that will be something that will have to be taken up with their support channels. It's the same when you buy an Online Pass for a game...it's not the game developer's issue it's Sony's or Microsoft.

well i don't know. but if Netflix can figure out a way to secure their customers a reliable connection during PSN outages and maintenance... then Square Enix should be able to figure out too. i don't know what needs to be done... but yes something DOES need to be done.
