So...How to Atma?

Alrighty, so let me begin by saying, I'm soooooo sorry to be contributing to the flood of Atma threads. But, I have some general questions that I'm having a bit of trouble finding out or I find confusing.

So over the weekend I unlocked my Zenith Weapon, and I was given the quest for gathering Atma. Alright, that's all well and good. I'm don't plan on stressing over the Atma grind, and just plan on doing it here and there. but my problem is, I'm not really sure how to get started.

So once I have the quest, am I able to just start hitting fates in the different areas and gathering Atma if the RNG favors me? I thought I read somewhere about having to go buy something before I get started, but I can't remember.

So if anyone would be able to help me with the questions: Now that I have the Atma quest, how do I go about gathering the Atma itself, and what is my next step in order to upgrade my weapon?
