Why is doing things as fast as possible bad?

I really don't get the stigma - and it's not just here, it's in the official game as well.

Now, don't get me wrong, I tend to take things slowly. I'm not the best player nor the fastest, so when I do a dungeon, I like to go as a medium pace, one pack at a time, to make sure nothing goes wrong.

But people seem to have some personal vendetta against things like speed runs, or escort leve spamming, or 'saccing' in coil turn 1. Like, I can understand not liking people being dicks about it, but that never seems to be the problem; it's like wanting to get things done as quickly and efficiently as possible is worthy of contempt from the playerbase at large.

And this is the only MMO in which I've seen this mentality. The end goal of the dungeon is to finish it, no? It has nothing to do with people wanting things handed to them, and everything with wanting to cut down the time of the grind as much as possible.

I just don't get it. Were Speedruns part of some long-time-gone event that ruined the servers, or something? .-.

Hate towards speedruns is actually a product of speedrunners hating on everyone who doesn't speed run. Recent example is Brayflox, tanks who were not used to speedrunning or didn't want to would get harassed for not doing large pulls, inexperienced healers would get harassed for not keeping the tank alive during huge pulls, DPS would get harassed for not doing enough damage, etc.

If everyone got along from the start, I'm sure there would be no problems with speedrunning.

There is nothing wrong with completing tasks as fast as possible.

There is something wrong when players (that are randomly placed together) begin forcing each other to play a specific way.

    Always remember the Silver Rule:
"Treat others as they treat you!" ...or something like that.

This. Speedrunners started it ... and continue to be the biggest asshats in the game. Content is there to be done, not be skipped. If you want to speedrun, go for it, its definitely not against the games rules. However take it upon yourself to find like-minded players, not force some random player to sacrifice his enjoyment because you cant spare 5-10 minutes on a damned video game.

It depends honestly - usually there's a lot of negativity thrown around at people who want to take things slowly. Then on the flipside, you'll exhaust all the game's content long before the next patch if you blow through everything as quick as possible, which isn't necessarily the player's fault.

In general: It comes off like you just want to get it out of the way. Like you're not really enjoying the game itself as much as you want to just 'finish' it.

For speed running instances particularly, it's a matter of demanding others rush it with you.
Also, speed running when there's a member that's new to the instance is kind of a dick thing to do.

I really love to do big pulls as tank or healer (it's just fun for me, I don't care about speed) so it's not like I don't like doing it. But the people who force it on others are complete jerks about it. As healer I was vote kicked because our tank died while we had 2 DPS who were ill suited to even do a speed run (MNK + SMN under geared is not good times). He insulted me and was rude to me beforehand as well for trying to tell him not to speed run.

Leaves a bad taste in your mouth and I rarely even do expert roulette now because of people like that.

These two nailed it. SRs definitely aren't bad but aren't for everyone. But you get a lot of harassment*/vote kick abuse from speed runners if you're not comfortable with it/good at it. And twelve help you if you want to watch cutscenes your first time through a story dungeon.

    * Not light criticism either. Like cussing out and stuff. I even saw one guy tell a female character (no idea what gender the player was) she should quit because girl gamers can't do anything right, only with much less politeness.

I've done speed runs, and I do take it slow. I usually base what I'll do based off whatever the tank wants. If I'm ever in a party with a baby tank a high lvl dungeon I've never felt disinclined to bark at them to pull more. Speed running can get out of hand though.. Specifically in regards to low lvl dungeons. Doing a sanic the hedgehog run in say totorak is just ridiculous to me. So in short it's not bad when done right, but a lot of people like to assume no one is new or not used to things being so fast paced these people are the ones who give speed running a name.

Now if we're talking about speed runs in everyday life including the bed room activities then...

Lyrinn and Codek put it very eloquently.

It's not that there is anything specifically wrong with speed runs themselves, it's the attitude that generally comes with the speed runs. Usually this means that the speed run is shoved down someones throat whether or not that person can handle the pace. It is because of that attitude that the stigma against them formed.
