Question about Improving My Relic Weapon

So...ever since 2.2 was released, I've heard NOTHING except people talking about the Atma grind here on the forums. I, for one, don't plan on struggling too much with it. Some of the best advice I've heard on the subject is just to take it as it comes, and there are plenty of other options should I decide not to pursue it.

However; we get to the point of my question.

I have my Relic weapon, but that is it. What steps do I need to start doing to improve on it? I know it can be upgraded a couple of times (once before Atma farm?). The information I'm finding hasn't been really helpful thus far though.

So, as someone who's been delving into CT and still working through the patch's story (I'm just now about to fight Leviathan for the first time), what steps do I need to be taking to start down the road of upgrading my relic weapon?

thanks everyone, and as always, any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Step one is to get 3 thavnairian mist (300 mythology tomestones each) and use Gerolt's forge to hit Zenith. Then it's a short quest to unlock atma (kill FATEs anf pray the RNG favors you).

Thank you so much Urthdigger. I have looked everywhere and couldn't find any information near as helpful as that haha. Now I know what I need to be working on. Thanks so much!

Your Relic Weapon is the Class-Specific weapon you get after you beat the main story. It's like your Relic Gear that you get from doing your Job story quests...only it's a weapon :P

Oh nice! I just need my chest piece for my Monk! I was wondering if there was a weapon as well!

That's your Artefact armor, which you'll get at the level 50 Monk job quest (along with your final Monk ability).

Your Relic is actually a weapon. The quest is involved - it involves getting a weapon made from Dzemael Darkhold treasure, synthing it with two level III materia, killing lots of beastmen/exploring one of their strongholds, a small amount of myth fees (only like 255 which isn't hard to gather) and then no less than five 8-man trial battles (Chimera, Hydra, Ifrit Hard, Garuda Hard, and Titan Hard); but at the end you get a level 80 weapon. That level 80 weapon can then be upgraded several times; the first of which only costs you 900 myth and nothing else, which is the Zenith weapon being discussed above.

Technically it can go a lot higher, but the Zenith (i90) relic weapon is currently 'enough' to face basically everything in the game except maybe Second Coil's final turns/Savage Coil, so even players who don't want to do the Atma grinds still do the Relic quest up to Zenith.

The armor from the job quest is Artifact, not relic. Folks refer to the level 90 variants as relic sometimes though. It's old terminology from FFXI.

The mats drop from Wanderer's Palace, not Darkhold.
