You can put up to 5 different stats on your Novus. Every time you start a new stat, it starts using Tier 1 and works up to Tier 4 as you put more of that stat on.
So instead of maxing out 2 stats, you can choose to stop after Tier 3 on your 2 main stats and use a different stat to finish off the Novus.
For instance, say you're a BLM that wants to put Crit&Det on their novus, but don't want to break the bank using Tier IV materia. You can put 33 crit & 25 det on your novus, and then add 17 spell speed to finish off your novus. In this way you're skipping the use of 11 Crit IV and 8 Det IV (actually, it will very likely be more than that ... see the OP) and instead use 11 spell speed I and 6 spell speed II, which is millions of GIL cheaper. It's a perfectly legitimate question to ask how many millions you are willing to spend to get that last 17 stat points instead of using a cheaper option that's almost as good.
Piety, for BLMs in particular can also be an attractive 3rd or 4th stat. If you want a little piety to reach 251 or whatever the magical Piety amount is, Novus is the absolute best place to get it from. It's much better than using your level up stats where you have to give up Int for Piety.
Only intend to max SS@44, which require 11 pieces of tier IV.So instead of maxing out 2 stats, you can choose to stop after Tier 3 on your 2 main stats and use a different stat to finish off the Novus.

with possibility of failed infusion... farming gil doesn't seems worth it.
Got a alexandrite stone and the ink what do I do now? I see I go trade 2 inks or 1 ink for PLD and get a scroll but is it like I can completely max all stats on both sword and shield or just certain stats?

You have my sympathy, OP. One of my FC-mates has been having the same problem. 80-90% success rate, fails every time.
I LIKE the fence. I get 2 groups to laugh at then.
