All those free to play games aren't really free though. In the end, you will pay more then you do now just so you can stay viable in the game. Free to play games are Pay to win in the end even if they start off fair.
While this is true of a lot of them, there are some exceptions. Still, for a company to stay in business they have to have income so even if items that you can buy in F2P games don't give a distinct gameplay advantage they do usually offer a lot of convenience or simply look pretty. They have to sell something to a lot of people to make up for the lack of subscription.
I'm not sure how you're coming up with $100 for 120 days in any case. I pay a bit less than that per year with a legacy discount, but I can't imagine the discount is that much.
I was wondering about the math myself. It does cost 180 if you pay $15 a month for 12 months. While this is true of a lot of them, there are some exceptions. I do understand that companies need to make money which is why I don't mind dropping $60 for the first month then $15 for the rest of the months. The problem arises when that amount doesn't cut it anymore because someone else is paying $100 if not more a month destroying everyone.
I fell into that free to play, pay to win trap a bunch of times.
League of Legends: $120+ some skins are too hard not to buy especially if they have that mystery gift like last Christmas omg...
Guild Wars 2: $50 for the game, $150+ from the in game shop.
Aika: $300 it's a Pvp f2p, pay to win mmo so what do you expect...
Ofc I didn't sit down one day and just spent that much. It was accumulative throughout the time I was playing the game in a course of half a year. $5 here, $10 there, $50 if there's a sale and so on.
I am honestly saving money playing ffxiv since I only have the subscription to worry about.
