How refreshing. Puzzles, clues in NPC interaction, no quest circles on the map.
Makes me feel a bit like in an old Adventure Game.
Please, SE, bring more of that!

The quest reward made it totally worth doing. It's great.
The notes said something about it being the start of a new series from what I recall. The ending of the quest certainly implies there's more to uncover.
More please!
I'm hoping to see an extension of this quest in future patches. Since the treasure was purported to be worth 100 million gil, but your actual reward was only 10 gil, I wonder if the future quests will gradually even out the expectation and actual rewards!
But of course, the REAL reward is the sense of satisfaction for solving the riddles without assistance. I hope that in future Winebaud's Riddles quests, there will be other types of riddles to solve, incorporating the surroundings more, or reading Eorzean script, or drawing on available sources of lore.
YES! I agree with this whole heartedly. This is what I really enjoyed about "The Secret World". That game had a lot of quests that required you to think - uncovering the solutions to puzzles, codexes, morse code.
Obviously some of that can't be implemented in this game, but I do enjoy the absence of quest markers. It makes the adventure more exciting, and the reward at the end more fulfilling. I enjoyed figuring out most of the puzzles yesterday, and helping people that weren't sure on what to do. XD
It certainly fosters community discussion, as generally people have to work together to figure out the solution.
I liked the concept, not so much the execution. If they're going to do this type of thing it needs to be set up more subtly and not pointed out that,
"THIS IS A QUEST! YOU'LL NOT GET ANY MORE HINTS LIKE A NORMAL QUEST, BUT ITS TOTALLY A QUEST!"
Plus, this felt more like riddles for the sake of riddles rather than something natural and interesting.
The concept has potential for sure, but they'll need to change their approach a bit, IMO.
I really wish they'd allowed journal note taking of the hint itself though. Fine, no other hints, I got it, but this text is what we have to rely on and think about and we don't jot it down? I was expecting something like just the hint we're given being in the journal (once we read it of course) and nothing else. Didn't realise until I'd left the area that we didn't even get that. I have a lot of stuff still to work through with this patch so haven't had a chance to go back and physically write it down yet. I was completely stumped when I first read it but maybe looking at it for a couple of days down the line will help something click. Probably won't actually run past there for a week or two to get the clue back first though.
For me, this finally gave a use to the journal which came with the 1.0 NA Collector's EditionI really wish they'd allowed journal note taking of the hint itself though. I thought it was pretty neat buuuuut....
More reliance on word puzzles and lore knowledge, less math... I hate math.
I liked the quest because it was a nice change and also the cutscenes were funny partially. But without the Interweb I wouldn't have solved a lot of the puzzles. Vertical arithmetics is all I say lol. How on Earth should I know of this? I don't work for Secret Service and it doesn't belong to common knowlegde unless things have changed since I left school a lot. Otherwise, please more of such quests. But maybe make it depend more on the Knowledge of Eorzea instead of "Real World" mathematics.
