    Anyone else feeling...uninspired?

I was still in highschool when I played FFXI. I still remember sneaking through the bowels of a volcano, praying there wasn't a bomb around the corner while I re-cast Sneak, because if it smelled the magic it'd disembowel me. Knowing even if I killed it, every zombie in a mile's radius would smell the blood and come running.

I thrive on that kind of danger. Knowing there's a good chance if I mess up, I won't survive.

I have yet to experience that same thrill here outside of dungeons. I have to be romping around in a L50 area wearing L20 gear before I have to do anything more than spam a single skill to win.

I know this isn't likely to change in the future, but all the same, I miss the challenge.

It is the new age of mmo where Fun > All else.

    Dying is not fun.

xi it felt dangerous because an mob at your level had about a 50/50 shot of killing you and a loss could cost you 20-30mins of xp. in XIV the hardest open world non-fate/hunt mob would be like in XI you at 75 going against a level 35mob.

As for blood agro and such, XIV is extremely dumbed down compared to the mob mechanics XI had. Again I feel this is for simplicity so people do not have it too hard outside coil.

The trouble of course is that these new 'dumbed down' MMO mechanics offer only short term enjoyment. It's the old risk vs reward paradigm at play again. Games are getting so much easier that very little truly feels rewarding any more.

Dying might not be fun but managing to accomplish something when you know there would be a harsh penalty for failure is a LOT more fun than doing the same thing knowing there is no risk at all. Developers are so scared of having any features that might be considered 'not fun' that they seem to have forgotten that a lot of the fun of videogames comes from overcoming such challenges.

I disagree, the current mechanics are much an improvement over XI, in every way.

Video games don't run on no money.

Super hardcore game = less players = less money = no more game.

If you wear i50 or lower gear, the world and many FATE still appear challenging. However, we are literally gaining equivalent levels as we obtain higher iLv. gear and gaining such gear is relatively easy. It is for this reason that we can generally run through the world, pulling everything in sight, and barely receive a dent. It's also the reason Elite marks such as Naul die in a matter of seconds with just a few people in range. There's little way a level 49 mob will survive against an iLv. 110 player. Gear is so oriented around events such as coil that it has caused great imbalance.

I assume the developers are just beta testing the game's mechanics at this point. May take years before the game is moderately balanced.

We most certainly live in a new age of MMO where things are easier or more simplified, or rather easier. It's one of those things where I'm ok with it, but I also miss some of it. Yes as a level 75 Corsair I had to hide and sneak from every waking danger, but as a level 50 Black Mage I'm a walking path of destruction that hides from no skelly man. I do miss the feeling of dread when it was night, but I'm also happy I don't have to worry about dying constantly. I also miss taking the long boat rides just to immerse myself in the game, but I also like being able to get where I want without having to wait.

To me it's oranges and apples, two totally different fruits, but I like the taste of both.

Nonsense. Dying is the most fun you can have in a game. What isn't fun is being punished with minutes to hours of tedium or even losing the ability to play entirely as a result of dying.

Taking a page from the dragon quest series, a low death penalty (half your gold as opposed to having to restart the game from your last save point entirely) is merely an excuse to kill you. That's why titan is so terrible, everything pre-heart isn't even remotely hard, it's just tedious. Dying in post-heart? It's almost expected, shit's tough. Dying in pre-heart? What the hell is wrong with you, you have to be half asleep to get hit by that stuff. It's just keeping those of us who can do it from getting to the actually engaging part.

But in terms of the open world, some areas should be tough to get to, sure. But in general it should not be a wildly dangerous place. At least, not in a theme park MMO.

What super doesn't help is the design team thinking people are going to steadily progress from i50 to i60, to i70 up to i110, when in reality people jump from i50 to i90 almost immediately. So when they design all this i70 content, they're designing content for an audience that simply does not exist.

this game throws you your gear is why....heres an easy way to gain gear:

as soon as you hit 50 grats, you got your lvl 50 AF gear, hop in CT and get ilvl 80, hop in ST to get ilvl 100.
you dont have to do anything inbetween now sepct wait weekly for ST resets for the gear and spend a few
myths on things if you want.
